Advantages: Noise , power, grin factor
Disadvantages: erm? , need to go to work, aren't enough hours in the day
I've been motocross riding for approx 5 yrs now, I started with a late 80's YZ250 bought for £450, I spent as much again in buying parts and repairing the thing. From there I moved down to a KX125 for a bit then a nmid 90's YZ250 and gently learn't my craft - only costing me 1 broken collar bone. When you ride at a track 125 strokers (2-stroke bikes) make one sound and 250's another - then you hear a big 4 stroke bike, and are blown away by the sound - I had to have one. I found a 99 bike that needed a bit of TLC, and drove 225 miles (each way) to get it - they are like Hen's teeth (new or secondhand). Motocross bikes need a lot of maintaining, I was expecting a bit of work but the rear suspension and swing arm bearings were awful - approx £175 later (including a manual) and a total strip down to bike still looks tatty due to old plastics. On the track it is like nothing else, easy to ride, excellent suspension and handling. I count myself as an average rider who could keep up withet pack (just), now with a couple of exceptions everybody appears to be going backwards. The noise is fantastic, it must be intimidating some riders as they move off the racing line (which is nice). Bottom line is this is a great bike, wonderful handling, you can ride harder for long and be be less tired - the power is predictable and won't bite you, unlike some 2 stroke bikes. Not convinced, well I've had sports bikes, written one off even. The roads are crowded, plod and Gastos everywhere. £40 will get me to a track, gain entry, fuel the bike and give me some lunch - the only limit is my skills from there on, no buses, no manhole covers or old ladies in Metros. Total de-stress and licence intact. Too old? I'm 34 now, and been doing MX'ing 5 yrs - my bike control is very good now, and so is my confidence. Fancy it but have questions - seek me out at Visordown.com and I
help all I can.
