My first trail bike was a DT175. For a couple of hundred pounds, I had a superb little machine that thrived on mud and utter neglect. Being a two stroke, with minimal weight or much power, it could be thrown into off-road adventures with total abandon, and survived countless minor crashes.

I have tried to play in the mud on my present machine, a BMW F650, but the pleasure does not compare. When the BMW goes over, a big heave is needed to get it up again, and there is a constant fear that expensive bits might have been totalled even after a soft landing.

With the DT, no such worries, and if anything the dings in the tank and general scrapes added more character to the little machine.

If you are after cheap thrills, look no further than a DT175
