Advantages: Very Funny - Contains the much loved Heath Ledger!
Disadvantages: none
Ten Things I Hate About You- How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways. (DVD): - Genre- comedy- Directed by Gil Junger and produced by Andrew Lazar was released in the October of 1999. This film was classified as a 12 because it contains a theme of teen romance, occasional bad language, some mild references to sex and one mildly violent scene.
The Films title is a twist on the taming of the shrew by W. Shakespeare and there are a number of Shakespeare references made throughout the film. For example Kat and Bianca's last name is Stratford, making reference to Stratford-upon-Avon, the English town known worldwide as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, also Katharina's suitor in Shakespeare's play is Petruchio of Verona, who becomes Patrick Verona in 10 Things. There are also a number of quotations throughout.
The cast include: - Julia Styles as Kat Stratford, Heath Ledger as Patrick Verona, Joseph Gordan- levitt(From Third rock from the sun.) as Cameron, Larisa Oleynik as Bianca Stratford, Larry miller as Walter Stratford and many more...
The film is set in an American high school were new arrival Cameron (Joseph Gordan-Levitt) is being given a tour on his first day. From the outset we have your traditional boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl moment, but theres the twist. The Stratford sisters aren't allowed to date, that is until their father introduces a new rule - popular sister Bianca (Laris Oleynik) can date only when her sister (Julia Styles) "the shrew" dates. Complicated? Perhaps. Heath Ledger comes into the picture as Patrick the only boy bold enough to try and tame the opinionated and angry Kat. Although the initial fiasco is the wannabe relationship between the most popular girl in the school and th e new kid- the more gripping relationship is that between Patrick and Kat. We watch their highs and we watch their plummeting lows.
I really enjoyed this film. Although the plot sounds a little complicated- it really isn't. The film has a traditional theme but manages to avoid being a typical American cheese- ball. It is outstanding in its own right and I feel it has some very clever script writing and very memorable lines. It is a bit of a chick-flick in that it has some weepy moments and some emotional scenes but as a whole I feel its just very comical and very watch able. I have known a lot of guys to enjoy this film as much as I have. Enjoy!
