Advantages: Funny, emotional and it even has a moral message!

Disadvantages: None

This film is one of my all time favourites! Although it's branded as a teen movie, this is a great film for everyone beyond their teens too! The film is a modern adaptaion of Shakespeare's classic, 'The Taming of the Shrew' and highlights, therefore, the continuing relevance of Shakesperae's work.

It stars, as its two lead characters, Julia Styles (Kat Stratford - The Shrew) and Heath Ledger (Patrick Verona - believed to have sold his liver on the black market), both of whom do an amazing job of seamlessly blending comedy with deep emotion and therefore provide two very real and charismatic characters with whom the audience can connect, and subsequently sympathise, with.

The film also delivers on the moral side as Patrick eventually chooses honesty over money, and Kat learns to accept and try to understand her sister Bianca, and vice versa, prompting a real emotional reunion between the two. Through Patrick Verona, the film also encourages people not to be told what to think and to decide for themselves.

Ultimately then, the film champions relationships and the great importance of the people in our lives over materialist and moneytary possessions and obsessions, which is very relevant in todays consumer-driven modern society. One of the greatest moments in the film is when Patrick sacrifices self dignity for Kat in seranading her in front of the whole school.

There is also a feminist theme throughout the film as Kat struggles for independence and the recognition of the music and literature of women. Yet at the same time, Kat learns to take into account the views and perspectives of other characters, such as her father and her teacher and learns to appreciate what she does have, and that she isn't the only one fighting for a cause.

As I mentioned, the film is also very funny and maybe just a little bit cheesy, but I'm a great fan of self-conscious cheese and it is certainly one of the things which makes this film so endeering. In the end, good once more triumphs over the villain (in this case arrogant, careless and ego orientated
Joey Donner); true love conquors all.

Finally, there is also a great soundtrack accompanying the film, notably for me a cover of the Cheaptrick classic I Want You To Want Me (here by Letters to Cleo) and you'll never be able to hear 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' without remembering the film.

All in all, this is a lighthearted, feel good film which is always great, especially to cheer you up after a bad day! It's also a fantastic way to remember Heath Ledger.

In summary - 10 Things I Love About This Film:

1.Feel good film
2.Funny!
3.It has a moral message
4.A fantastic cast
5.A great soundtrack
6.Can be viewed for educational purposes (Shakespeare), which is always a good excuse for students!
7.A film of continuing relevance
8.There's something for almost everyone here
9.Good cheese : )
10.A film about people, for people.

The film can now usually be picked up for as little as £2.99! Bargain!

Summary: Everyone should own a copy!
