Advantages: Great storyline and characters
Disadvantages: A little dated
This has to be one of my favourite chick flicks. I am a big fan of them and this has been among the top of my list since it came out in 1999.
The film is based on the Shakesphere play 'Taming Of The Shrew'. It is a more modern adaption though based in a highschool in America. The film is based around a group of characters who attend the school. There are the sisters Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) and Kat (Julia Stiles), whose mother left the family a few years ago. Their father now, who is a doctor for teenage mothers, is very over protective. He never lets the girls go to parties or date anyone. The two girls are very different. Bianca is the perfect one who all the boys fancy. Kat on the other hand is a rock chick who hates men. Their father decides to come up with a new rule and decides that Bianca can start dating when Kat does. This is obviously not an easy task but with two boys interested in Bianca they make it their mission to try and get Kat to date.
The other main characters in the film are Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who is the new kid at school. He falls in love with Bianca at first site and becomes her French tutor to try and win her round, only problem being that he doesn't speak French. He has a bit of competition though from Joey (Andrew Keegan), who is the schools hottest guy, who models part time. He isn't the smartest guy though and doesn't catch on when the Cameron uses his money to pay another person to date kat. It isn't an easy job to find someone to date her but Cameron and his new friend Micheal (David Krumholtz) think they have found the perfect guy, Patrick (Heath Ledger). He is a mysterious guy, who has many stories spread about him but seems the perfect guy for Kat. Will they be able to get Kat to go out with him? Will Bianca go out with Joey or fall for Cameron, you will have to watch to find out.
The storyline of the film is obviously good being based on a Skakesphere play. It is a great modern adaption of a classic story. I have always enjoyed films that use these stories as they tend to be very enjoyable to watch. This one is no exception. The film includes lots of elements to help make it enjoyable including humour and love stories. I like the way there is more than one love story during this film. This means that you can see two different types of love.
The characters in the film are all great and work well together. The main characters are like the kind of teenagers you would expect in a school all together in a tangled web. They are all connected in some way, which is what makes it an interesting story to follow. I particularly like the characters Kat and Patrick. I think both Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger played these characters brilliantly. They have a lot more dimension than the characters of Joey and Bianca. I also like the attitude they have towards each other. Heath Ledger in particular added some great comedy to the film, especially in the scene where he serenades Kat (One of my favourite parts). It is quite strange to watch it after his death, especially as he was quite young in the film. It does show another element to his acting talent apart from that shown in the blockbuster films he was later in. Julia Stiles also plays her character well, and plays a fiesty girl well.
The film is a little out of date overall now as it was filmed in the late 90's and so their outfits and their music are a little old. Therefore I think it may be more enjoyable to those who watched it when it was first out. This doesn't stop it being a good film though, it just can look a little dated. The music although old, is fun and you will probably recognise most of the songs. The soundtrack does go well with the film and adds to it.
The DVD is rated a 12 as there are some minor references to nudity and some swearing. There aren't an extras on the DVD I have. This is porbably because of how old the film is. The DVD is available for around 4 pounds now, so is definitely a bargain.
Overall 10 Things I Hate About You is a fun, feel good film that I would watch over and over again.
