Advantages: Very enjoyable, easy watching,
Disadvantages: None
10 Things I hate about you is based on Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew". The storylines of the two are fairly similar, the plot is that there are two sisters, the elder of whom is not interested in dating, and the youngest of whom is desparate to. Their strict father has made a rule that the younger sister, Bianca, cannot date until her elder sister Kat does. Which doesn't look to be any time soon.
10 things I hate about you is set in the USA in the late 90s at a high school that Bianca and Kat both attend. Bianca gets a lot of male attention, and really wants to start dating as she has her eye on a male model, Joey. However, because of their father's rule, she can't start seeing him until her sister starts dating someone. Kat is much more of a loner at school, a feminist, and uninterested in any of the boys there, who she sees as being very immature.
Cameron is a new boy at the school, and he seems to fall in love with Bianca at first sight. When he learns of her father's rule, he plans a way to get Kat to start dating, paying someone else to take her out. He does this by suggesting the idea to Joey (who has lots of money) and Joey decided to pay Patrick (played by the gorgeous Heath Ledger) to take her out on a date. Little does he know that Cameron plans to steal his girl!
This is one of my favourite girly films, it is full of humour and has an enjoyable storyline. You come to really like and empathise with some of the characters, like Cameron, and also very strongly dislike others, such as Joey, who is very arrogant.
The film has some lovely scenes in, for example, one where Patrick tries to woo Kat by singing "Can't take my eyes off of you" to her in front of the whole school during a sports practise. Watching it now does make me very sad though that Heath Ledger has passed away.
It has a great soundtrack to it, lots of quite rocky songs which really remind me of the late 90s!
It's an easy to wacth, fun film that I think will appeal to most. Even though it's really a chick flick, I think boys will also quite enjoy it. If you get the opportunity to watch it do. It has been out for arond 10 years now, so the DVDs should be fairly cheap to get hold of. I think it's very much worth trying to get a copy.
Summary: A fantastic film
