i have to agree with the other reviewers that media focus in this period, one of the most significant in the UK's, has been long overdue. the makers have gone about in a docu-drama style focusing on one particular community effected by the turbulent political changes and battles that were doing on at the time. this gives a more personal experience of the events and certainly is a different and somewhat more interesting perspective than what you would read in many history books. obviously this is still a drama and therefore it probably helps bring the period to life doing it this way but regardless I thought it was a very nice touch particularly given the predominantly ... I found 1066 as a gritty and authentic documentary/drama looking at the famous battle. I have to confess that my knowledge of the Battle of Hastings is limited to my Year 8 history lessons and that Harold got shot in the eye with an arrow. Well 1066 has completely opened my eyes to what it must have been like to live through this period of history. The documentary uses re-enactments to follow the stories of fictional characters from all three sides of the battle. The documentary has made up the characters but there stories are thought to have been real. This is a two part drama which has been long overdue. So many films and history series have delved into the battle of 1066 but have only skirted over the everyday people and concentrated only on King Harold and the Viking Lord Hardrada. In 1066 they have focused on the smaller yet maybe more important characters of three anglo saxons and another three norsemen. On the anglo saxon side we are mainly connected with a young man, Tori, who only a few hours before being called upon to fight against the Normans was married, not even managing to complete his wedding vows.
