1408 (DVD) ... released 26 December, 2007 at Paramount Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Director's Cut, PAL / Conclusive proof both that one man can power a horror film, and also that John Cusack is one of the most believable actors of his generation, 1408 is an entertaining and surprisingly effective Stephen King adaptation, albeit one that runs out of steam by the final reel. The premise finds Cusack’s character as an author of paranormal books, even though he doesn’t believe in such things himself. However, when researching his latest work, he checks into the mysterious room 1408 at The Dolphin Hotel in New York, managed by Samuel L Jackson in an effective cameo. But room 1408 is a room where nobody has lasted more than an hour in it, and thus Cusack considers it the perfect location for some book research. It’s in the build up of its premise where 1408 is very much at its strongest. Cusack is a compelling guide through the story, and the film delivers some effective chills and jumps as the tension ratchets up. Into the final act and this control is relaxed, and as a result some of the potential is wasted, but you’re still hard-pushed to feel short-changed as the credits role. For 1408 proves to be both an effective little horror film, and one of the best Stephen King adaptations in many, many years. --Simon Brew

He sees flashbacks of previous occupants hurling themselves from the window into the street far below, and when he tries to leave he finds the doorway behind the door is bricked up; similary attempts to shimmy along the ledge outside are cast aside as the building and ledge stetches out into the infinite distance before him. Time has stopped completely still and all attemps at contacting the outside world prove to be ...more

In the summer there were quite a lot of films coming out but I didn’t get the chance to see them all. However, a cinema nearby me for Halloween was playing a range of scary films and one that they picked was the film ‘1408’. I had heard of it over the summer but until seeing the trailer on the Apple site I had no idea that it was a horror I had just assumed it was Sci-Fi or a historical film and that the number was a year date. So anyway I knew John Cusack was in it who I hadn’t seen in a while as well. I do like a scary film and I know that Saw 4 had come out too but in all honesty I think I’ve seen enough Saw films to last me a lifetime and the fourth was too risky a ...  Read the complete review

Directed by Mikael Hafstrom, 1408 is a movie adaptation of the Stephen King short story, which can be found in the collection 'Everything's Eventual'. As a fan of Stephen King's writing I have been disappointed by many of the film adaptations of his work. Most have been very poor, a few adequate, and only one or two have been exceptional (I'm thinking of 'The Shawshank Redemption' and to a lesser extent 'The Green Mile'). 1408 is not amongst the lower quality works, but sadly it doesn't quite match the higher echelons of the films named above. It is a standard horror/thriller, which teenagers who haven't seen many horror films before might find to ...  Read the complete review

Mike Enslin is a cynical man, who specialises in writing books about haunted hotels and graveyards, without really believing what he writes. That is, until he goes to the Dolphin Hotel, after receiving an anonymous tip about room 1408. His agent books the room for him, but when he arrives at the hotel, the Manager, Gerald Olin, tries very hard to persuade him to take another room. When Mike insists, Mr Olin tells him of the many deaths that have occurred in the room, both suspicious and natural ones. He is fighting a losing battle though, and Mike eventually gets his own way. Are Olin's actions just a marketing ploy? Or is there really something scary in room ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Unlucky For Some (811 words)

As a lover of horror films I've recently reignited my passion for films that terrify me and overcome my fear of watching them alone in the dark. So to follow on from the disappointing Population 436, I opted for 1408. In true horror tradition, both films have 'cleverly' used a combination of numbers that add to 13, which should mean thrills, spills and chills are in store for the viewer. The film is based on a short story by the master of horror, Stephen King. Unsurprisingly, this means the film's protagonist, played by John Cusack, is a writer. Perhaps surprisingly though, the events unfold in a hotel in New York, 300 miles from King's usual setting of ...  Read the complete review
