Advantages: Brutally entertaining
Disadvantages: Usual American portrayal
They don’t come much more American than this! A very powerful action thriller set in New York City following a couple of killers hell bent on being unpredictable and clever and using the media and justice system in their tangled web of crime. Most of the movie by image definition almost seems like it is actually shot on digital 8 video tape! Actually this is very well done adding some sense of realism to an almost incredible madness. Following the first ‘fifteen minutes’ the film succeeds in generating a suspenseful feeling by it’s sheer brutality of direction. Why can’t we British make them like this? I particularly liked the inclusion of an unexpected laugh as well (unusual in this kind of movie) and some slight musical accompaniment. This all adds up to a winning entertainment formula that is original yet crudely depicted. You do get the feeling though that the central characters by acting style seem so hard and intent on impressing someone with their hardcore American accents. This one is well worth a look though.

- 25/03/01 I knew this of course, but after the 'run in' it actually became bearable and I was pleasantly surprised by the movies gripping feeling, as if I actually wanted justice within the story to pervail.. |
