Advantages: Zac Effron, teenage appeal, nice and mindless and perfectly watchable
Disadvantages: just an average teen film really
I saw 17 again at the cinema this afternoon. I had a day off work and my friend is currently unemployed and we fancied seeing something fairly mindless so picked this film!
It was exactly what we expected really! A film to appeal to kids and teens really but perfectly watchable for two people in their 30's too! :-)
17 again is about a guy called Mike O'Donnell who is in the process of divorcing his wife. He feels that he didn't get a chance to make anything of his life as he was destined to be a basketball player but something happened when he was 17 (I won't say what just in case it spoils the film for anyone).
Adult Mike (played by Matthew Perry) basically becomes 17 again (17 year old Mike played by Zac Effron) after he is visited by a spirit guide and he goes back to High School - but not to the 1980's when he was at school to the present time when his children are at High School. He has to figured out what he needs to do - sort of what his mission is - if he is to return back to his older self!
Its a typical Freaky Friday / Big type film but not quite as good as those classics. It's perfectly watchable though and i'm sure teenage Zac Effron fans will love to watch the film. It's full of pretty teenage actors and so will appeal to teens.
It is not out and out funny but there are quite a few amusing parts- mainly involving grown up Mike's best friend Ned. In fact I would say he is probably the best character in the film.
Matthew Perry looks old and quite rough in this and I can't believe I used to fancy him when he played Chandler in Friends! It is a strange casting choice considering Zac Effron is so good looking - it doesn't make you think they are the same person at all!
There are a few bits in the film that i found a bit "uncomfortable" - mainly when the adult Mike in the 17 year old Mikes body starts getting a bit too close to adult Mike's soon to be divorced wife. Although we know that it is adult Mike in 17 year old Mike's body - the wife doesn't and therefore it all seems a bit inappropriate!
I'd recommend watching this on DVD unless you are a major Zac Effron fan. It's not really worth the money to go and watch at the cinema but is a perfect Saturday night in DVD I would say, or a perfect afternoon at the cinema when you have nothing else to do like we did today.
