2 Days in the Valley (DVD)

Is this film better than "Pulp Fiction"? Maybe not. But "2 Days In The Valley" is certainly along the same tracks with better elements of comedy. The characters are all a little more eccentric and well-rounded than those of the famous Tarantino movies. Not well publicised at the time of release, I only watched this film on rental from the video store on request from male friends' adoration of actress (and principle character), Charlize Theron. Though not the best crime movie in the world, '2 Days in the Valley' is one of those satisfying little movies which save your bacon when scanning the video shelves or TV schedules. Very much in the shadow of 'Pulp Fiction', it's a sprightly little thriller, complex and cross-cutting to the point of being plotless, as an assortment of hoods and victims cross paths and swords over the titular two days. Straight in there - this is simply one of the best films I've ever seen. James Spader (as usual) gives an awesomely commanding performance as the hitman in what is a dark yet hilarious film. The stop watch gag and the toupee are great and the ending is superb, not quite the "what the hell happened there?" of Taratino's 'From Dusk til Dawn.' It was during the hieght of Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' eera that '2 Days In The Valley' was released, and no doubt because of it. The story consists of a number of characters whos lives intertwine by means of fate and coincidence and it does so with a splash of dark comedy in places, coupled with a personally emotional stuggle each character is working through. The acting is superb by all. Charlize Theron (Monster) as James Spader's (Sex Lies And Video Tape)love interest, as deceitful and cunning as himself, both out to swindle Teri Hatcher (Superman series) out of her inheritance, despite the three initially being in on it.
