24 - Season 1 (DVD)

Description: Genre: Television - 24 / Theatrical Release: 2001 / Director: Jon Cassar, Davis Guggenheim / Actors: Kiefer Sutherland, ... more
24 - Season 1 (DVD) ... Leslie Hope ... / DVD released 14 October, 2002 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Box set, Colour, Letterboxed, PAL, Widescreen / Such a simple idea--yet so fiendishly complex in the execution. 24, as surely everyone knows by now, is a thriller that takes place over 24 hours, midnight to midnight, in 24 one-hour episodes (well, 45-minute episodes if you extract the ad breaks). Everything to take place in real time--on-screen and off-screen time the same--which means no flash-backs, no flash-forwards, no nice handy time-dissolves. Every strand of the plot has to be dovetailed and interlocked to make sure that things happen just when they should, in the right amount of time. Not that easy. Creator Robert Cochran and his team of writers and directors have done a pretty impressive job in putting the jigsaw together and keeping the tension ratcheted up high, as Federal Agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) hares around LA trying to stall an assassination attempt on a black Presidential candidate and rescue his wife and daughter from the clutches of the Balkan baddies. Twists, turns, revelations and cliffhangers are tossed at us with satisfying regularity. It’s not perfect: we get some hokey plot devices (instant amnesia, anybody?) and the final twist, once you start thinking back, makes no sense whatsoever. There are altogether too many huggy family moments ("I love you, Dad." "I love you, son"); and as for überbaddie Dennis Hopper’s "Serbian" accent… Even so, this is undeniably mould-breaking TV. Sutherland, rescuing his career from the doldrums in one heroic leap, fully deserves his Golden Globe. Sets and locations are artfully deployed--we gain a real sense of LA’s splayed-out geography--and Sean Callery’s score is a powerful, brooding presence. Like Murder One and The Sopranos, 24 is one of those series future TV thrillers will have to measure themselves against. On the DVDs: 24 is released in a six-disc box set. On discs 1- 5 there are no extras, but disc 6 includes the "alternative" ending and a preview of Series 2, presented by an urbane Kiefer Sutherland, that tells us precisely nothing. The transfer, in 16x9 widescreen and 2.0 Dolby Digital sound, does the high production values of the original every justice.--Philip Kemp

In comparison to the later series' the plot is not ridiculously outlandish as it often becomes in season 6 in particular. 24 manages also to get the action and character development just about right as our hero Jack Bauer has to become more and more ruthless to save his family and the life of the future President. This is balanced out with the gripping action sequences of gunplay. The characters themselves are also very good...more

Jack Bauer is a Federal agent who heads up the Counter Terrorist Unit. He is given the task of preventing an assassination attempt on Presidential candidate, Senator David Palmer. The 'assassin' is believed to be working on the inside of the Government and Jack may trust no-one. When Jack's family are abducted and the authorities suspect Jack of attempted murder, he turns to colleague Nina Myers who is his friend and confidant... 24 is filmed in real time, and every second of these 24 hours is edge of your seat stuff. 24 is a completely orignal and innovative television experience. After the first 3 or 4 hours you will not be able to put it on. I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review 24 hours of pure genius (194 words)

As a man who has let the 'great' American shows pass him by somewhat, I bought the first season of '24' with a feeling of anticipation, excitement and hope that the hype I had heard surrounding this now phenomenon of a show was true. Luckily for me, it was. Season One throws you head first into the world of Jack Bauer, Los Angeles CTU Agent. Jack Bauer is a family man whose world becomes turned upside down before your eyes in 'the longest day of his life'. Jack's anguish becomes the viewer's delight, as 24 delightfully tense, pulsating episodes unfold in real time. Like a book you just can't put down, addiction quickly sets in and each brilliant ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review 24 - Season 1 (DVD): Jack's The Lad! (1627 words)

~ ~ I always liked the top American TV series "24", starring the brilliant Kiefer Sutherland as the ruthless, resolute and remorseless counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer. What stopped me really getting into it was the fact that when it aired on UK television the storyline was constantly interrupted by overlong ad breaks, and the producers of the series used the old "get 'em to come back next week" trick of always leaving the viewer hanging in the ether at a crucial and dangerous part of the story. This drove me nuts, as I always wanted to know NOW what was coming next, plus the fact that with my busy lifestyle I could never fully guarantee I'd ...  Read the complete review

Jon Cssar and Davis Guggenheim directed the first series of 24 which would prove to be an iconic programme. Each episode is shot in real time over 24 hours. Occasionally theshots go multi screen with a ticking clock in the middle to show the time. Each hour long episode concludes with the clock ticking down the hour. The series focuses on CTU agent Jack Bauer plyed by Kiefer Sutherland. Jack lives with his wife Terri and daughter Kim. He is assigned to protect Presedential candidate David Palmer, the first black man to run for President. Because of thsi he is targeted by terroists who don't want a black man in office. Premium Review 24 - Season 1 (DVD): Each episode has more action than a top quality thriller (310 words)

I didn't start 24 until season 6 was airing, I actually did the unforgiveable and started watching from season 6! Which, despite notoriously being the worst season (in other words not amazing) I really enjoyed. And so I bought Season 1 on DVD and I could clearly see what the fuss was all about. If you're one of the few that arent familiar with this show allow me to explain: the series features CTU (Counter Terroist Unit) agent Jack Bauer who is the man responsible for the protection of Senator David Palmer, possibly the next president of the United States. From the first episode we are told of an assassination plot against him which starts Jack off on a ...  Read the complete review
