27 Dresses
I have to admit I'd have liked to see this at the cinema, but hadn't got any money spare when it was on, so I was really pleased when someone bought me this as a present on dvd. For a start it stared Katherine Heigl who I've very much enjoyed watching in Greys Anatomy, and then it's a romcom with a plot line that appealed to my sense of humour.
Jane is the lead played by KH, and she's single and loves a wedding - you could say she's in love with the love and romance of weddings in fact, so much so that she's been bridesmaid to other people a massive 27 times. Ok so this in itself is a little ott, but it gets worse when you find out that she's kept all of her bridesmaid dresses, and there's a lovely scene where she's showing them off to Kevin Doyle (James Marsden) a photographer who she meets at one wedding and finds herself in conflict with him when he challenges her view of marriage by being completely cynical about it all. The scene is funny, touching and cringeworthy as you see her trying on each dress one by one for him as he photo's them all, from sleek and slinky to puffy and little bo peep style and tries to convince her that no bride ever wants her bridesmaids to look good which is why they're so awful.
At the same time, her younger sister Tess (Malin Akerman) comes to stay and heads straight for her boss George whom Jane is secretly in love with. The two sisters come close to blows over George and Tess leaves. The film then sort of takes you on a bit of a meandering walk between the two sisters as each one learns a few pretty harsh life lessons, before they come together and can sort things out as sisters - as well of course as the various love plots all coming good (which I shan't give away as that would spoil it).
Despite this being very much a girly film, I've spoken to a few fellas (including my own husband) who sat down to watch it feeling that the most they'd get from it would be a bit of eye candy, and then actually found themselves enjoying the film content too . With the concept for the storyline being what it was, this film could have gone either way and been a total abomination or a complete success, for me I'd say the latter is definitely true and it's a film I will enjoy watching again so I'm very pleased to have it as part of my DVD collection.
Summary: Another RomCom that could have gone either way, but excellent acting and humour saved this one well.

- 14/06/09 A small part of me wanted to see this at the cinema but I wasn't sure I wanted to spend money on the ticket!
It sounds a lot better than the advert suggested -- thank you for this review! I'm gonna give the film a shot now :) |
