28 Days Later: A Pleasingly Apocalyptic Vision Of The Near Future Director: Danny Boyle (of Trainspotting Fame) Written by: Alex Garland Main cast: Cillian Murphy Jim Naomie Harris Selena Noah Huntly Mark Brendan Gleeson Frank Megan Burns Hannah Stuart McQuarrie Sergeant Farrell Synopsis: London has been infected by a highly contagious virus released from an animal testing facility in Cambridge infecting the world with murderous rage. Chaos, disorder and the fall of the civilised world ensue. 28 days later a handful of survivors emerge to the uneasy silence of a new world populated by the danger of the remaining infected and others ? Body: As you can see the plot is hardly original. Here we go again you might think, not another zombie/apocalypse! Such other films come to my mind such as Day Of The Triffids (Not zombie but apocalypse), Return Of The Living Dead and Dawn Of The Dead. There?s probably others scratching around in the back of my head which could be attributed to this particular genre. I think we could all think of a few. From the outset, this film is different. I put this down to the excellent casting on Danny Boyle?s part. Main Protaganists Jim played by Cillian Murphy and Selena played by Naomie Harris are highly capable but, until now, little known actors. Both have a handful of films and TV under their belts. It makes you wonder why we don?t promote much more of our home grown talent in place of complete disasters such as Elizabeth Hurley and Madonna. Other notable elements in this film are the use of DV which adds a high adrenalin paced factor to the action sequences. Danny Boyle?s use of the camera is familiar to anyone who has seen Trainspotting and Shallow Grave. One signature shot defintely stands out near the end of the film where Jim and Selena are freeze framed as they are thrown forward in the
back of a taxi as it crashes into some iron gates. The soundtrack also adds a great deal of atmosphere to the film. This is a great film so just go and watch it. If you find you don?t like it might I suggest you are devoid of good taste. Stars - 5
