Advantages: Drew Barrymore, fine array of characters, locations
Disadvantages: The odd bum note
Generally if i'm honest, I think Adam Sandler has the adaptability of a tree in films, his acting appears to consist of silly voices and faces and puerile jokes, however for some reason I really took to this film and found it very, very charming. The film is set in Hawaii so the backdrops are stunning and locations like this do have a habit of helping you relax.
Sandler plays Henry Roth who works in the marine section at a zoo and can charm any woman but has issues with commitment, he is a player, pure and simple, well he is, until one day after his boat breaks down and he gets stranded on the other side of the island he has breakfast and is charmed by the beautiful and kooky, Lucy (played by Drew Barrymore).
He builds a rapport with her and thinks she likes him so returns to the restaurant the next day to see her again, but she claims not to know him and gets upset at his behaviour. He discovers she has a rare condition where every day she wakes up and suffers short term memory loss. Henry spends his time each day trying to charm Lucy and this is the basis of the story.
For an Adam Sandler film he puts the childishness and stupid faces on hold and plays a man who is so smitten he would do anything for a smile or acknowledgement from the woman he loves, as he says, he has to make Lucy fall in love with him each day. He meets her father and brother who have kept their home as it was on the day she lost her memory to ensure she doesn't get confused they go to great lengths to ensure she remains happy and blissfully unaware of everything. They are played really well and Sean Astin especially as the dumb body building brother is a really funny comic creation.
For me the star of the film is Drew Barrymore a woman who men and women can relate to, charming, easy to watch she entrances Henry and its easy to see why she has charsima to burn, the film is a lovely little thing and it really does have a big heart, there are laughs to be had in the various characters, through an enormous hawaiian chef to a strange androgynous assistant at the zoo who you aren't sure if they are man or woman.
The film is colourful, charming has enough laughs and a big enough heart to please most people this for me is Sandlers least annoying film and if he could follow this up with more I think he'd make much more of his career.
