Advantages: Plot, Leads, etc

Disadvantages: Supporting characters,

50 First Dates was a film that I had heard of, but never watched as it hadn't really appealed to me. When a friend recommended it though, I thought I might as well borrow it and found myself watching it yesterday during a boring afternoon.

The film starts off by introducing us to Henry Roth and his many conquests, he is a womanizing vet living in Hawaii who is with a different tourist every night, and doesn't see anything wrong with it. At the same time he also works at a marine vet but what he really wants to do is sail to Alaska, something that he has been planning and saving up for ten years. However, all of his plans change when his boat breaks down outside a cafe where an art teacher called Lucy Whitmore has her breakfast every morning. They have an instant connection and then decide to meet back in the cafe the next morning, however when Henry turns up Lucy doesn't recognise him or remember anything about the day before. It turns out that she has 'Goldfield Syndrome,' which is a type of amnesia, and since her accident she thinks every day is 13th October, 2002. Henry falls for Lucy, and has to think of a different way every day to make her fall in love with him.

The leads of Henry and Lucy are played by Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, a great pair that really bounce off each other so well and have fantastic chemistry. Whoever was the casting director for those two certainly did a great job! Adam Sandler managed to add in his usual humour while remaining serious and romantic in other scenes. It is quite different to the other films that he has starred in, as this film falls into the category of chick flick more than anything else. Drew Barrymore is really good in her role, but the character doesn't seem entirely realistic for the age she is supposed to be, she seems a bit to naive and carefree.

My opinion of the film is totally positive. It seems like a fairly unique plot twist to the normal boy and girl meet and fall in love story, although amnesia is becoming more popular as a theme in films and tv shows these days. Setting it in Hawaii just gave it a totally relaxed feel, and its a very easy watching film with not too much brain power required. Its the perfect film for a rainy afternoon or sleepover because of that.

Sandler and Barrymore were a much better match in Wedding Singer, but they carried off the premise quite well in this film. Not one I'd normally watch, but my wife had dibs at the DVD shop, so I sat through it, prepared to be bored and was then mildly surprised at how engaging it was. Good review. 8^)
