At first, none of them die, although they are too badly scarred to continue working. But then the slasher starts to inflict such serious wounds that some of them die. Matt, in love with one of the strippers called Loretta, is determined to f...

DavidJay Ju-On - The Grudge (DVD)
... as he might - and Lord knows he has tried awful hard - still, despite the seemingly endless run of remakes and sequels and addendums and what have you, Takashi Shimizu has failed to diminish the power of his 2003 instant-classic Ju-On : The Grudge. Remade by Sam Raimi s Ghost House production company (and again directed by Shimizu) as simply The Grudge, the film is itself a remake of Shimizu s earlier (and, if truth be told, better - but a DVD release still eludes us) TV movie Ju-On : The Curse. It shares that film s locale, spooks and fractured narrative, although it is does follow a slightly more conventional route come the final third. Shimizu dispenses almost e...

dangerous_jamie Heroes - Complete Season 2 (DVD)
... the sheer awesoneness of season one, I was almost salivating at the prospoect of another helping of ensemble superhero drama pudding to come along and clog up my entertainment arteries. Then what happened? The bloody writers strike. As a budding writer myself I thoroughly understand the plight of the writer, but dammit I need my entertainment. A lot of my favourite shows were effected by the strike including Heroes. The Hiro Nakamura meets samauri legend Takezo Kensei subplot was exciting and interesting, but had no bearing on the m...

DavidJay The Haunting (DVD)
... Wise s 1963 The Haunting is, I ll go ahead and announce right here and now, one of my favourite films of all time. Complex, intelligent, layered, beautifully shot, wittily written - whatever one s criteria for judging the merits of these things, The Haunting meets it, shortly before scaring the very pores out the skin... The tale, based on Shirley Jackson s The Haunting Of Hill House, concerns an experiment conducted in the house in question, a place "born bad", by a scientist interested in determining the legitimacy or otherwise of the myriad of legends concerning supernatural activity therein. He enlists a handful of volunteers to assist him, princip...
