James Bond - Octopussy (Ultimate Edition, 2 DVDs)
by martyfarty69
"Octopussy" is a 1983 Spy movie and the thirteenth movie in the hugely successful James Bond movie franchise series, it stars Roger Moore, Maud Adams and Desmond Llewellyn.
------------------------------------
The Plot:
The movie begins with a fatally wounded Mi6 agent "009" stumbling into the British ... Embassy in East Berlin with a fake Faberge egg and dressed as a clown.
When the real Egg shows up at auction in London, 007 ( Roger Moore ) is dispatched to find out who the seller is and track down the murderer of 009, cunningly at the auction Bond is able to switch the real egg with the fake and outbids prince Kamal Khan ( Louis Jordan ), eventually forcing Khan to bid $500,000 for the fake egg, knowing eventually he would realise he had purchased a fake.
Bond tracks Khan down to his palace in India and finds out Khan is working with a renegade soviet general named Orlov ( Steven Berkoff ) who is planning a terrorist attack that will hopefully expand Russia's borders within Europe, and so Bond must infiltrate the operation and prevent a terrible attack, however he finds himself being distracted by the mysterious and beautiful Octopussy ( Maud Adams )
------------------------------------
Octopussy is certainly a notable Bond movie, not least for possibly the most Racist line ever uttered in a mainstream cinema movie ( " That should keep you in curry for a while" ! ), however it is also notable for Bond being a little too slapstick at times, also the comedic feel to the chase scene ( the sound of a tennis ball and the crowd moving their heads left and right as in a tennis match, is a tribute to Vijay Amritraj who is a professional tennis player ), however one of the highlights of the movie is Louis Jourdan's performance as Kamal Khan, its a truly delightful performance that is both suave and evil in equal amounts, and certainly one of the better Bond villains of the series.
Overall Octopussy is simply average Bond fare for me, and is probably one of the worst Roger Moore bond movies, however it still gets 3 stars from me because..it's James Bond !! :) Read the complete review |

Xtro (DVD)
by ElissaXx
Now where to start with this one. I am a BIG horror fan (I have the entire VTC label Pre-Cert tapes) This film is just epic. The plot is that there is a character called Sam Phillips, he's a scientist and he's mysteriously abducted by evil extra-terrestrials. Only his young son, Tony, witnesses the bizarre kidnapping. Sam returns to ... earth three years later as a monsterous alien. He's back to claim his son for his new homeland and to infect the blood of random earthlings. Strange powers are transmitted to Tony, enabling him to animate his toys into lethal weapons. Together, father and son ravage anyone who crosses their path.
It's just ace! If you like B - Horrir movies then watch this. The DVD itself is pretty good too. It includes in it's special features: Alternate Endings, Deleted Footage, A video interview with the Director of the film (Harry Bromley Davenport), an extensive still gallery feauturing rare Behing - The - Scenes photos.
I'd just also like to note I have this on Thorn EMI and Spectrum VHS tape and the DVD picture quality is far superior. Read the complete review |

Risky Business (DVD)
by DoctorGreenRay
I was originally, planning on writing a review for a different movie. However, on television I noticed that "Risky Business" was going to be on in a few minutes. It had occurred to me, that I have never seen this film yet. I had no idea what this movie was about. I just knew it as that movie where Tom Cruise wears sunglasses. ... I'm aware of the references, and I came in assuming it was going to be one of those 80's teen comedies. You know - he's going to have parties at his house, getting into mayhem, and fixing things before his folks got home. Well, I was half right. The other half I wasn't expecting.
(STORY)
A high-class teenager living in the suburbs of Chicago - Joel Goodson (Tom Cruise) is going to be graduating high school and not sure what he is going to do in the future. His parents are going to be out of town for a while leaving Joel all alone. This is where things start getting "risky".
*Now, it's going to be difficult to continue the synopsis without the act of giving away some plot points. So, if you don't want to know more, just skip the next paragraph.
Joel's good friend Miles, convinces him to use this opportunity of freedom to go crazy. First, he raids the liquor cabinet and dances in his house with the stereo system playing full blast. Then he takes out his father's Porsche 928 and drives it in the streets. Later on, Joel meets a "call girl" named Lana. They have sex and spend the night together. The next morning Lana tells Joel that the fee for her services is $300, but he can't afford it. From there on, it gets tricky to summarise the story. But, Joel and Lana decide to join forces. She provides the "products" he supplies the clients. They create a "business".
(PERFORMANCES)
It's evident that Tom Cruise had appeal from the get-go. Without the purposes of watching this to witness a younger Tom Cruise, I probably wouldn't have seen this. Simply put, He just radiates "Star Quality", even back then, but of course you already know that.
I love Tangerine Dream! Since they provided the soundtrack here, the music plays a big role and sets the tone. It's dark, with that electronic, ambient sound in the background. Very 80's new wave. The music might be one of the few things I liked.
(THOUGHTS)
It started off promising, the conversations were funny and felt natural hearing them said by the actors. It made me chuckle frequently. I think a fair way to describe this would be, a dark version of John Hughes. To bad it didn't have the same magic. And, it got dimmer as the movie went on.
I found out it was a sex, teen comedy. But, you know what? I only found the beginning funny. With a few laughs every now and then. I don't know what category this falls under... "Drama" I guess. It's sort of dual and bland most of the time. I was waiting for some humour to appear. But, that doesn't seem to be the case here.
I decided to watch this with my mom (not the best companion to watch this with). She came in, and I said "Hey, I'm going to watch a movie with Tom Cruise. Want to see it?". I was nervous watching this with her, because there was a lot of swearing. Then the sex scene comes in. This movie does focus on sexual themes quite a bit. The funny thing is, I don't think my mom knew what was going with the prostitution stuff. Luckily it didn't get awkward... Well perhaps a few times. It reminded me how I felt while I was watching Scarface or Taxi Driver. It's just makes you feel somewhat filthy all the way to the end. But, not as extreme.
If anything, I would think this film satisfies young boys fantasies of doing girls, making money, and creating an empire. But, even that - I feel could have been executed better, or at least "differently". If you took out the prostitution and swearing, and added more jokes - it could have been more commercial and fun. But, it would have ruined the style and purpose of what this film was about. I guess, I was just expecting a different movie.
I don't think I'll be rushing anytime soon to purchase this. Catching it on TV is your best bet. This is aimed for older teens. This is NOT suitable for younger kids. My life was fine before watching this, and it would've remained the same if I never saw this. There is no urgent need to watch this. But, if you've got time to spare... I say what the f***.
