Friday The 13th [1980] (DVD) ... 13th: Part 1~~~ Released in 1980, Friday the 13th is the first in a long franchise of horror films featuring the masked stalker Jason Voorhees. As legend goes one summer in 1957, a young boy (Jason) drowned in Camp Crystal Lake whilst his counsellors had sneaked off to have sex. The following year the town is rocked by another tragic accident when two counselors are brutally murdered after they abandon the kids to sneak off together, which understandably leads to the camp being closed when the killer is never found. Rec (DVD) ... have just seen the remake of this movie, and though it is a cliche but I think this, the original, is better.The reason in that you getthe sense that the first film is more of a raw shot and felt more authentic. The way a film is made to appear as reality and thus the "unbelievable" subject matter becomes more real in a viewers eyes. The remake,obviously being a reproduction is trying to recreate this raw-ness and as such does not have the same gritty edge. This tradition seemed to begin with The Blair Witch Project leading to Cloverfield and more recently Paranormal activity. Dark Water [2003] (DVD) ... reading some of the other reviews I m not quite sure why I liked this so much, but I did. Dark Water is a film by Hideo Nakata, thd director of the Ringu. The book is also from the author of The Ring, in fact this film is quite alot like the ring in many ways but for me, this feel was equally, if not more so creepy, perhaps due to no prior expectations. Yoshimi and Ikuko Matsubara are a mother and child fighting a court case for custody of Ikuko against newly divorcee father Kunio.
