Notting Hill (DVD) ... Hill is a lovely rom-com, but it also has a major flaw, which, for me, is at no point overcome. The heroine, Julia Roberts, is in no way appealing, bar obvious aesthetic appeal. In fact, we are shown two examples of her treating our hero, Hugh Grant, appallingly, which puts me off her, to the extreme. Indeed, her saving grace in the film seems to be portrayed as she s famous, and thus we can t expect her to behave like other people . However, all of the other cast are brilliant, and there are some really touching moments, particularly at a family birthday dinner scene, where the family bonds seem almost genuine. Love Actually (DVD) ... series of mildly interlocking love stories set all over the world, Love Actually is a Christmas rom-com with perhaps a bit more class than usual. The storylines range from the fairly conventional (wife realises husband is cheating on her with pretty younger women who works below him... so to speak) to the humorously obscure (two people working as sex stand-ins, both very sweet and shy in love). The way in which it isn t one overriding plot but a series of mini ones was something which appealed to me, as it was more like life, and the motif that Love actually IS all around was displayed through this. Elizabethtown (DVD) ... is a 2005 film directed by cameron Crowe and stars Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst. Orlando fresh from his success in Lord of the Rings and the newest of the cute young things decided to push out this awful dreary rom com with Kirsten Dunst as his female lead. Orlando plays Drew Baylor a previously successful designer whose latest trainer design bombs severly and sends his company into a financial nightmare.
