A Day at the Races is a 1937 Marx Brothers comedy directed by Sam Wood. The plot concerns Standish Sanitarium and its owner Judy Standish (Maureen O'Sullivan). Judy is facing bankruptcy and the forced sale of the sanitarium because one of its rich patients, hypochondriac socialite Mrs Emily Upjohn (Margaret Dumont), is due to leave because they can find nothing wrong with her. Judy and fiancee Gil Stewart (Allan Jones), who has just purchased a race horse with the last of their money in a desperate gamble, decide that only the support of Mrs Upjohn can save the institution.
