Loved-up newlyweds, Cliff and Cydney, make their way to the tropical islands of Hawaii for their honeymoon. On a helicopter ride they discover a beautiful and secluded beach which you can only reach by a long hike over the mountains and through the jungle. Along the way they meet some other hikers - Kale and Cleo, another newlywed couple who have some serious anger issues, and Nick and Gina, a vivacious couple who they immediately hit it off with and decide to complete the hike with them. A Perfect Getaway was written and directed by David Twohy who also wrote and directed Pitch Black. At first glance it seems a very different kind of film to the science fiction horror that launched Vin Diesel, but there are strong similarities. Both films are minimal in the use of special effects, instead depending on the dangers inherent in their locations to create an atmosphere of isolation and danger. In Pitch Black it's a desert planet and in A Perfect Getaway it's a remote trail in Hawaii. Both films also have characters that keep you guessing about who the good and bad guys are. A Perfect Getaway, however, is a different beast altogether; it subtly subverts the audience's expectations of the genre, providing a compelling mystery that has a rather satisfying, and unexpected payoff. This suspense thriller is based in Hawaii and stars Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich as Cliff and Sydney a married couple on their honeymoon and head off to explore the island however the trip begins to turn sour when they meet two hitchhikers and they feel threatened by their behaviour and this fear is hightened when they learn of a double murder of two people who are similar to themselves.
