Above the Law (DVD) ... Grier ... / DVD released 28 January, 1998 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Closed-captioned, Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, Full Screen, Widescreen, NTSC / Steven Seagal plays a Chicago cop who takes on CIA types in this action thriller from Andrew Davis (The Fugitive). Davis brings muscle to the project, including some strong set pieces that make Seagal (who also co-wrote and co-produced the film) look good. Co-stars Pam Grier and Sharon Stone also assist in this endeavour, yet nothing can really mitigate such ridiculous moments as Seagal's getting profound with a villain in his raspy monotone: "You think you're above the law. But you're not.". --Tom Keogh, Amazon.co.uk

... he does stand out for being an American as most martial arts movies feature Chinese or Japanese actors. What Seagal does have is a huge presence that is apparent in all of his movies but I personally feel that this is simply down to his size and the stern look that he always seems to posses. With the sombre look, no nonsense attitude and of course his martial arts ability he's carved out a relatively successful film career and has starred in numerous martial arts based films. I feel that Seagal is without doubt more...more

Nico Toscani (Steven Seagal) is a police officer in Chicago and also a martial arts expert, he is trustworthy and ever so loyal to his wife Sara (Sharon Stone). When Nico and his partner Jax (Pam Grier) are put on a case involving prolific drug dealing, the two good friends think that it will be a simple open and shut case but when everyone that Nico arrests is set free and his local church is blown up things start to become a little more complicated. When Nico comes under fire he investigates further into who could be carrying out these attacks on him and threatening his family. Nico is asked to stand down from his job as he has become a liability but he ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Wicked action packed fighter flick! (400 words)

Admittedly it's been a while since I saw this, but I'll do my best to recollect my thoughts on the film! It stars Cynthia Rothrock and Yeung Biao (mates of one Jackie Chan). The story is a little hazy for me, but I think Rothrock plays a cop and Biao plays a lawyer. Both of them team up to crakc a drugs ring (forgive me if I'm wrong - I think that plot may have been in Above the Law 2, not sure) To be honest the plot isn't that important here, what takes centre stage are the awesome fight scenes - they are plenty here to keep martial arts fans happy and they are all very, very cool! Plenty of bad guys being summersaulted ...  Read the complete review
