Airplane! (DVD) ... 2000 at Paramount / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Closed-captioned, Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, Widescreen, NTSC / The quintessential movie spoof that spawned an entire genre of parody films, the original Airplane! still holds up as one of the brightest comedic gems of the 1980s, not to mention of cinema itself (it often tops polls of the funniest movies ever made). The humour may be low and obvious at times, but the jokes keep coming at a rapid-fire clip and its targets--primarily the lesser lights of 1970s cinema, from disco films to star-studded disaster epics--are more than worthy for send-up. If you've seen even one of the overblown Airport movies then you know the plot: the crew of a filled-to-capacity jetliner is wiped out and it's up to a plucky stewardess and a shell-shocked fighter pilot to land the plane. Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty are the heroes who have a history that includes a meet-cute á la Saturday Night Fever, a surf scene right out of From Here to Eternity, a Peace Corps trip to Africa to teach the natives the benefits of Tupperware and basketball, a war-ravaged recovery room with a G.I. who thinks he's Ethel Merman (a hilarious cameo)--and those are just the flashbacks! The jokes gleefully skirt the boundaries of bad taste (pilot Peter Graves to a juvenile cockpit visitor: "Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?"), with the high (low?) point being Hagerty's intimate involvement with the blow-up automatic pilot doll, but they'll have you rolling on the floor. The film launched the careers of collaborators Jim Abrahams (Big Business), David Zucker (Ruthless People) and Jerry Zucker (Ghost), as well as revitalising such B-movie actors as Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen, who built a second career on films like this. A vital part of any home film collection. --Mark Englehart, Amazon.com

... of Brian, though it could perhaps be better compared to similar spoof movies of that time such as Blazing Saddles and Space Balls. It is so cleverly written, it uses vasts amount of humour, making great uses of the English language, with great emphasis on puns throughout. For example, Airplane's trademark 'Surely you can't be serious' asked by Striker, to which Dr Rumack (Leslie Nielsen) replies 'I am serious...and stop calling me Shirley'. This is one of the many great use of puns throughout the film. As well as the...more

Premium Review Airplane! (DVD): Mel Brooks Eat Your Heart Out (1200 words)

Rating:

Up until the time the movie "Airplane" was released in 1980 comedy director Mel Brooks had been the undisputed king of zany and off beat comedy in the cinema, with such marvellous spoof movies like "Blazing Saddles" (1974) and "Young Frankenstein" (1974). It's widely rumoured that when he first viewed this superb spoof from the comedy team of Jerry and David Zucker and Jon Abraham he realised his days as the king of comedy were well and truly numbered, and although he did go on to direct another couple of passable comedies (Spaceballs (1987) and Robin Hood - Men In Tights (1993)) its fair to say they weren't nearly as good as his earlier ...

Crowned Review It's a film review, but that's not important right now (1115 words)

(Film only review) Introduction --------------- Disaster strikes a flight as the crew and some of the passengers are struck with food poisoning. Can failed pilot Ted Striker land the plane? Or will the audience laugh themselves to death first? The Cast ----------- The cast of Airplane is a strange one. To some degree, the cast is unimportant, because it’s the humour that counts. On the other hand, the casting is critical, as the key to much of the humour lies in the deadpan delivery of the actors. Thankfully, the cast is excellent, delivering their lines as though they are in a serious drama. They approach the film with real zest ...

In 1980, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker unleashed the comedy classic ‘Airplane!’ to international acclaim, a film that combines high-tension danger, struggling romance and a lot of silly jokes to create one of the most influential films of the early eighties. It’s a funny film. PLOT Elaine Dickinson (Julie Hagerty) is a stewardess on a flight that her lover Ted Striker (Robert Hays) boards in an attempt to win her back following his mental health problems and failure to completely get over his war experiences. Unfortunately it becomes apparent that the fish course served to many of the crew, including Captain Oveur (Peter ...
