Advantages: lots of jokes
Disadvantages: some a bit too stupid
Airplane is famous for establishing a new high in laughs per minute. Airplane is a Paramount Picture that was written, directed, and executive produced by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. It stars Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, and Leslie Nielson. The film is a spoof of a 1957 movie called Zero Hour! Robert Hays plays a former wartime pilot who must take control of a passenger jet after every pilot comes down with food poisoning. Hagerty plays his former girlfriend, a stewardess on the plane who has left him, and Nielson plays a doctor who is trying desperately to save the victims. The plot may sound serious, but the movie is anything but that. Part of what makes the movie so funny is that the actors stay serious. The movie plays as a series of back to back jokes, some good, some bad, and some good because they?re so bad. Though some of the jokes seem outdated the movie does lay claim to having more laughs than any other movie. One scene in particular stood out to me because of it?s content. When a stewardess asks a handicapped girl how she would like her coffee, she replies ?I like it black- like my men.? I have doubts that this scene would have made it into the movie if it were made today due to it?s lack of political correctness. Airplane launched the comedy career of Leslie Nielson who had, in the past starred mainly in dramas. Jerry and David Zucker went on to direct Nielson in four more films, The Naked Gun series and Spy Hard!
