Advantages: Funny in places

Disadvantages: Weak plot

Of all the conmic creations of Saca Baron Cohen Ali G is probably the least subtle of the lot, sure part of the joke is a white Jewish bloke playing the role of a black man who is a rather inept gang member cum DJ cum super sexy lover but a lot of the humour is quite crude and heavy with sexual references.

This was the first character he took to the big screen and it turned out to be a fairly average comedy with a few funny parts but not quite managing to live up to the standards or levels of comedy that the TV series produced.

The story sees Ali favourite community centre under threat of cloisure so he decides to stand for the local council, from local politics he finds his way, by a combination of error and a devious Chancellor of the Exchequer who decides to take advantage of Ali, onto the national stage and a place in the Commons and ultimately the highest office in the land.

Soon though he has to rely on his gang played by Martin Freeman and Tony Way alongside his girlfriend Julie (Kelly Bright).

The strength of the TV show was based on Alli interviewing unsuspecting members of the political or academic world who had no idea what lay behind the character, the film does not have that, instead it relies on the actual character and his foolish naive ways, certainly there are some very funny moments but its truggles to maintain momentum throughout and toils to build in a plot that the audience will actually care about.

Personally I found this movie funnier second time around which was the same for the Borat movie as well, it is entertianing provided you are in the mood for the rather purile comedy however there are enough C list celebs in cameo roles prepared to send themnselves up to make the film reasonably interesting.

Summary: Comedy film
