Advantages: very funny, character is same as tv show with good support cast
Disadvantages: can be considered offensive, bit silly at times
Ali G in da house is the first of the movies which came from one of the characters in Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G television show. This character was Cohen's first one in the show and what really launched him as a great comedian and television star as he interviewed the likes of David Beckham. His quite hilarious and offbeat style is hilarious to watch if you are not easily offended and enjoy a good laugh.
The film stars Ali G as the leader of Da West Staines Massiv (a fictional gang made up of a group of wannabe gangsters from Staines (a small town near west London. Their rivals are Da East Staines Massiv. Ali runs "Keep it Real" classes at his local leisure centre and is devastated when he finds out that the centre is to be demolished by the local council. Ali and his friends decide to protest against the closure of the leisure centre. He goes on a hunger strike and is spotted chained to some railings by the Deputy Prime Minister David Carlton (Charles Dance). He decides to use Ali as a tool to destroy the Prime Minister's credibility so that he can become prime minister himself. Ali is put forward to be an MP for Staines and is thrown into the seedy world of politics. Will he be involved in overthrowing the current prime minister and more importantly can he save the leisure centre and keep it real?
Ali G Indahouse is a very funny film and his character is just like it is on the small screen. A human side to Ali is revealed during the film, the idea of Ali G running for PM is a brilliant, fresh and funny one - and the relative stupidity of Staines' gangster man is mixed well with the stern, harsh world that is politics. The film is also full of brilliant new characters - and instead of just interview after interview, we get a proper comedy film that is very enjoyable. Yes it is sexist, rude and slightly crude but this is Sacha Baron Cohen and Ali G you are talking about. People are bound to have mixed opinions, especially on a film like this one but I found it very funny and enjoyable. I have yet to see Bruno and am not sure how good it is in comparison to the other two I have seen but Ali G is recommended by me if you enjoyed his TV show and are not put off by what can be considered as some offensive humour and jokes.
David Carlton: [to Ali] Have you ever considered becoming a member of parliament?
Ali G: What me wanna do that for? It's full of pricks.
David Carlton: That's a little harsh. I'm an MP, am I a prick?
Ali G: Yes.
