Advantages: Aliens, Ripley

Disadvantages: No guns, too dark, bad sript

A poor third in stallment to the Alien saga, with Ripley finding herself marooned on a penal planet designed for society's sickest loonies. The tone is downbeat with the Newt and Hicks characters (who'd done so well to survive 'Aliens' intact) killed off by calllous scriptwriters before the opening credits have even elapsed.

Ripley gets her head shaved, tries to convince the inmates that a creature must have survived and arrived with her crash-landed ship, and before you know it, expendable support characters are dropping like flies.

The Alien itself is a slightly different variety, lending credence to the argument that the embryonic form of the creature inherits certain characteristics from it's host, which in this case is a dog. A very unfortunate dog.

There are a few nice touches - including a cameo by Lance Henrikson as a terminally damaged Bishop and some nice alien POV camera work, but ultimately this film struggles to live up to the legacy of it's predecessors. There are some interesting plot developments, and a particularly dark finale which could and probably should have signalled the end of the franchise.

Other cast members include Brits Brian Glover, Charles Dance and Paul McGann. Directed by David Fincher.
