Advantages: Enjoyable.
Disadvantages: Not Very Memorable.
Ant and Dec are big faves of mine ever since they were in the fantastic Byker Grove. I think it is so sweet that they have stayed friends all of this time and that they still do TV shows together. I have always thought they were very funny and some of the nicest presenters around in the UK. When I heard they were doing a film I just thought to myself well will they be able to act and then that this film is bound to be some silly slapstick film that can be enjoyed by all. Well I watched it last night and this is what I thought.

The Film:
The film begins with a producer called Morgan who is meeting with two guys he has never heard of before. These guys are Ray and Gary who believe they have a story that is definitely worth listening to. Morgan sits down and eagerly begins to listen as they begin their story.
Ray is always down on his luck working on a market selling Elvis memorabilia and dodgy video copies. He is always looking for the next quick way to make money and he believes that if he goes to America and advertises that he will buy anybody’s Elvis memorabilia, he can come back to Britain and sell it at a higher price and make a profit. Always thinking he is in the right Ray goes for this idea.
Ray’s friend Gary meanwhile works in a high rise firm but is unnoticed and although he doesn’t hate his job it is obvious he could feel a lot better about it. Gary knows al about Ray’s dodgy dealings but he still agrees to help him out whenever he needs it.
While Ray is over in America he meets a man called Harvey who not only sells him an Elvis video but offers to sell him another video that he believes Ray will be interested in. As soon as Ray sees the video he is enthralled and agrees to buy it as he believes he is watching a real alien autopsy the only problem is he needs £30000 to buy it. Not having this money he turns to Gary who introduces him to a hardened criminal type who would pay for the video.
When Ray actually has paid for the video and gets it he ruins it forcing Ray and Gary to come up with some way of faking the video to keep the criminal happy and them alive.
Verdict on the Story:
The concept of this story is very good and loosely based on a true story of a couple of lads who tried to fake an alien autopsy video and sell it on to make a profit. The actual fact that there may be a real alien autopsy video which has been shielded from the public ever since the Roswell crash of 1947 is enough to justify all of what happens in this film. What I mean by this is that people would go crazy over the video and want to se it more than anything and I believe that you would be able to sell it for a lot more than they do in the film.
The story plays out well from beginning to end and I only counted two occasions when I thought come on move along now as it was a bit slow. I think people expecting to see a complete slapstick movie will be disappointed as although it has its moments it does have quite a dark feel at times but I have to say I laughed out loud a lot during the film. It has a story that has a lot going on and it is not boring at all apart from two occasions and I have to say I was surprised that Ant and Dec have managed to do such a good job with the story.

Cast and Characters:
Declan Donnelly – Ray Santilli
Ant McPartlin – Gary Shoefield
Bill Pullman – Morgan
Harry Dean Stanton – Harvey
Verdict on the Cast and Characters:
I have to say that Ant and Dec are renowned to me as simply being two best friends who are the favourite to do comedy on British TV. Never did I think they would go ahead and make a movie and I did have my doubts about their acting and I really hate bad acting. When I was watching the film I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were and forgot them for being the two cheeky Geordies that I know and love. I have to say though when I turned it on I did not expect to see Bill Pullman’s face on the screen as this is one well established American actor.
The characters in the film are great and although I would not exactly say they are memorable as I had already forgotten about them and had to look up their names, I will say that they are fun to watch. Ant and Dec fit the characters perfectly and they have convinced me that if they ever wanted to they could have a successful career in British films. The character of Harvey is fun and Morgan is a typical bib egotistical character. All of the supporting cast of which there are too many to name them are great and the only thing I can say about them all is that they are very enjoyable to watch which does have something to do with the script.

Special Features:
Unfortunately my rented DVD did not have any special features which is a shame as I hear there are outtakes, deleted scenes and an alien game on the DVD to buy. Therefore this is really just a film only review. If I get to borrow the actual DVD though at any point I will edit.

Verdict:
This film is a lot of fun and like you can expect from Ant and Dec do not expect some Oscar-worthy masterpiece but instead a film that is easy going, doesn’t take any sort of brain power away from you while you watch it and is thoroughly enjoyable. I probably would not watch it again to be honest as it not the kind of film that you could until maybe five years down the line but I would not hesitate to recommend it to people as it is a lot of fun.
I do have a warning though for Ant and Dec fans which to be honest shocked me while watching the film. There is actually a scene in which one of the pair swears strongly. Now this shocked me as you just don’t expect them to swear as they are simply Ant and Dec known for their family shows. Another scene is an actual insinuated sex scene which again shocked me a little although I was laughing so much. I think Ant and Dec are trying to shed their young image a little.
In conclusion I think I am going to give this movie four stars. No it is not the best one out there but it is certainly not the worst and to be honest with you I think it is quite enjoyable. I think people should watch this to see a different side to Ant and Dec and I think people will be surprised as this film is not as slapstick as I was expecting and a lot better. I do love alien things though.
Thanks for reading.
