Advantages: Superb Movies, Action, Style, Extras
Disadvantages: 3 & 4 a bit weak
For anyone that has either a DVD drive or DVD player in their home and is a lover of at least 2 of the Alien series then you should buy the ALIEN LEGACY DVD box. There should be no debate, no is it, isnt it worth it. It definately is. For full detials of the individual films, please see my individual reviews so you can get a decription worthy of the name. ( if I did them here, you would be reading for a week ! ) The Legacy box set is the 4 individual Alien films added together so looking at the individual films will let you see the extra details on the individual extras - Alien alternate soundtrack, cut scenes etc, Aliens interview with James Cameron, cinema trailers etc, Aliens 3 making of film, cinema trailer etc, Alien Legacy behind the scenes, cinema trailer etc. The bonus with the Legacy set is an additional disc explaining the origins of the Alien film with interviews with Giger, Scott, O'Bannon other crew, rehersals and so on. All the films have been expertly transferred to DVD and the quality is excellent in all of them. The Access menu is probably best on the Alien disc but all have a lot of thought put into them and are amongst the best of breed in terms of usability and look. As far as the films go, Alien probably rewrote a lot of rules not only for Sci Fi movies but also the horror flick. Very few before or since have captured that dark menacing reality feeling. Aliens was just a good old fashioned action western with the good guy ( in this case girl ) killing the bad alien in the black hat. An all round great action movie with slightly more scary bits than normal. The fact that James Cameron was directing certainly helped matters as almost nobody can touch him for excitement and good old fashioned yelling for the hero. Aliens 3 was the weakest of the series for me, there were too many loose ends and unexplained endings and happenings. Having said that, stylistically, it was the best
of the 4 with it almost entirely in brown and black backgrounds and settings. Legacy itself again is quite weak in the storyline but up there in the action stakes. The thing holding it all together for me is the acting of Sigourney Weaver, she acts her socks off here and is one of the few believable characters. Winonna Ryder ( although I fancy her knickers off ) is just too wimpish and is merely a distraction. For overall value this is a good deal with all the extras and the promise that this is a limited set. Although whether this means it is one of 60,000 or 600,000 is another matter. To sum up - buy it !
