Alien Quadrilogy (9 DVDs)

Description: Genre: Science Fiction & Fantasy - Science Fiction / Theatrical Release: 1986 / Director: Ridley Scott, James Cameron, ... more
Alien Quadrilogy (9 DVDs) ... Jean-Pierre Jeunet, David Fincher / Actors: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt ... / DVD released 08 December, 2003 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Box set, PAL / The Alien Quadrilogy is a nine-disc box set devoted to the four Alien films. Although previously available on DVD as the Alien Legacy, here the films have been repackaged with vastly more extras and with upgraded sound and vision. For anyone who hasn't been in hypersleep for the last 25 years this series needs no introduction, though for the first time each film now comes in both original and "Special Edition" form. Alien (1979) was so perfect it didn't need fixing, and Ridley Scott's 2003 Director's Cut is fiddling for the sake of it. Watch once then return to the majestic, perfectly paced original. Conversely the Special Edition of James Cameron's Aliens (1986) is the definitive version, though it's nice finally to have the theatrical cut on DVD for comparison. Most interesting is the alternative Alien3 (1992). This isn't a "director's cut"--David Fincher refused to have any involvement with this release--but a 1991 work-print that runs 29 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and has now been restored, remastered and finished-off with (unfortunately) cheap new CGI. Still, it's truly fascinating, offering a different insight into a flawed masterpiece. The expanded opening is visually breathtaking, the central firestorm is much longer, and a subplot involving Paul McGann's character adds considerable depth to the story. The ending is also subtly but significantly different. Alien Resurrection (1997) was always a mess with a handful of brilliant scenes, and the Special Edition just makes it eight minutes longer. On the DVD: Alien Quadrilogy offers all films except Alien3 with DTS soundtracks, the latter having still fine Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. All four films sound fantastic, with much low-level detail revealed for the first time. Each is anamorphically enhanced at the correct original aspect ratio, and the prints and transfers are superlative. Every film offers a commentary that lends insight into the creative process--though the Scott-only commentary and isolated music score from the first Alien DVD release are missing here--and there are subtitles for hard of hearing both for the films and the commentaries. Each movie is complemented by a separate disc packed with hours of seriously detailed documentaries (all presented at 4:3 with clips letterboxed), thousands of photos, production stills and storyboards, giving a level of inside information for the dedicated buff only surpassed by the Lord of the Rings extended DVD sets. A ninth DVD compiles miscellaneous material, including a Channel 4 hour-long documentary and even all the extras from the old Alien laserdisc. Exhaustive hardly begins to describe the Alien Quadrilogy, a set which establishes the new DVD benchmark for retrospective releases and which looks unlikely to be surpassed for some time. --Gary S Dalkin

... killing off the crew. Here we have Ridley Scott's Director's Cut, and while it doesn't add anything amazing, it is still fun to compare. Aliens (1986) = the best of the four, James Cameron's film has surviving Ripley returning to the Hell she escaped to guide some hapless marines through. However, it expectedly gets very messy, resulting in some amazing set pieces, and here, we get Cameron's definitive cut of the film. Alien 3 (1993) = the worst of the four, it was David Fincher's film debut, and suffered...more

Premium Review Alien Quadrilogy (9 DVDs): Alien Quadrilogy (459 words)

Rating:

Four fantastic films in one collection, brilliant! Alien, it's such an original film, with a good storyline, and the ability to make you jump every time you watch it. It starts out with seven characters who encounter a mysterious alien on their space ship. The events that follow are both interesting and unexpected. It certainly deserves the Oscar it won for special effects which, especially for the time it was made, are impressive. I think the first film is best because the creature was mostly hidden until the end, which made it more fearful. To me, this is one of those films that you just have to watch when it's on TV even though you have the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Best value for money (179 words)

Wow !! This simply has to be one of the best value boxsets out there. There are 9 discs in this set and what you're getting is an alternative version of each movie as well as the original of the first four alien films, plus loads more extras. This is worth the purchase for the first two films alone, which are absolute classics of cinema. Alien 3 is flawed but can stand on its own as a decent film. Alien Resurrection is definately the poorest of the four films, but no less an essential part of the collection. The more recent Alien versus Predator films are not included, for which I am also thankful! Alien and Aliens are both essential viewing and in my opinion, ...  Read the complete review

The Alien Quadrilogy is one of the best DVD boxed-sets that I have ever seen. It is incredibly authoritative and at a huge 9 discs amazing only costs about £10 now from HMV! For any fan of the films, or in fact anyone who wants to get into science fiction, this is an essential place to begin. Here's a brief detailing of the films: Alien (1979) = the film depicts a mining spaceship called the Nostromo, with contractors onboard. Among them is Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), a woman who tries to survive as an alien has snuck on board and begun killing off the crew. Here we have Ridley Scott's Director's Cut, and while it doesn't add anything amazing, it is still ...  Read the complete review

Alien Quadrilogy is a collection of the original four "Alien" films. The "Predator" films and the recent "Alien vs. Predator" films are not included (a box set with these films included does exist though, if you're a fan of Predator as well). -- What you get... -- There are a total of 9 discs in this box set. Each of the four films has two discs - the film itself, and the additional "Special Features" disc. On top of that, you get an additional disc which contains bonus features for the box set as a whole. The DVDs are packaged in a sort of book format (technically, a "DigiPack") in a slip cover, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Alien Quadrilogy (9 DVDs): Excellent value for money for the fan or the merely curious (195 words)

Excellent value for money - all four Alien films in one collection! I managed to get this for a very reasonable price second hand although I think it is still cheap for what you get when purchased new. Now, I am man enough to admit that I bought this mainly for the extras (sad I know, the life of a nerd eh?) of which this collection certainly did not disappoint. The extras are a top notch look into the conception, production of these films. One interesting thing to note is that the first three films all had a section regarding the reception of each film - apart that is from Alien Resurrection, funny that.. The films of course are for the most part ...  Read the complete review
