Alien vs Predator (DVD) ... Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova ... / DVD released 07 March, 2005 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / In delivering non-18-rated excitement, Alien vs. Predator is an acceptably average science-fiction action thriller with some noteworthy highlights, even if it squanders its opportunity to intelligently combine two popular franchises. Rabid fans can justifiably ask "Is that all there is?" after a decade of development hell and eager anticipation, but we're compensated by reasonably logical connections to the Alien legacy and the still-kicking Predator franchise (which hinted at AVP rivalry at the end of Predator 2); some cleverly claustrophobic sets, tense atmosphere and impressive digital effects; and a climactic AVP smackdown that's not half bad. This disposable junk should've been better, but nobody who's seen Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil should be surprised by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson's lack of imagination. As a brisk, 90-minute exercise in generic thrills, however, Anderson's work is occasionally impressive... right up to his shameless opening for yet another sequel. --Jeff Shannon

... beings, harbouring hundreds of swiss artist H.R. Giger's sleek and deadly aliens and worse still, regularly used by Predators as a hunting/training ground, similar to the Columbian jungle in the original Predator film. This is a pretty good premise, and in the right hands could have made for a great film, but sadly Director Paul W Anderson's direction is for the most part incredibly one-dimensional and unengaging. There are admittedly a few reasonably exciting action sequences on offer, but the plot is paper-thin...more

Premium Review Alien vs Predator (DVD): PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY (843 words)

* WHOEVER WINS... WE LOSE The tagline to Alien vs Predator could not be more aptly put, but from a viewers point of view. Whilst the movie is billed as the decision to which breed of alien will take over the world, it turns out as nothing more than just humans getting caught up with two bad guys rather than the usual one and trying to survive. I remember I did watch this movie around when it was first released in 2004, when these clash of franchise movies were becoming popular, around the same time as 'Freddy vs Jason'. You know there's a lot on the line for each of the franchises when it comes to these movies, as it's going to be difficult for anyone to want their ...  Read the complete review

Aliens Vs Predator was the first of two (at the time of writing) movies featuring two of the biggest behemoths in sci-fi film history coming head-to-head for the very first time. It had been on the cards and in production hell for a very long time- there is a scene in Predator 2 towards the end, in the Predator spaceship, where an Alien skull is seen mounted on a wall- and had been seen in the comics for quite a while but this was to be their first big-scren outing together and, as you might expect, there was quite a lot of hype surrounding this long-awaited pairing. It is a shame then, that the movie never quite matches the hyped anticipation that had been ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Alien vs Predator (DVD): "Game over man, game over!" (1469 words)

Some films, on paper at least, seem to be the stuff that great ideas are born. In the hands of a capable director, scriptwriter, special effects team and actors who can do the business, the image on paper is likely to transcend all expectation on the big screen. Witness the Matrix - a great idea, much cherished by Andy and Larry Wachowski through their intimately adorned storyboards and concept art, provoked a sense of intrigue in Warner Brothers, enough to green light the $75 million dollars required to re-imagine their wet dream on screen at least. Add Keanu and chums to the mixer, along with John Geta's spectacular vision in bullet-time and an intelligent script ...  Read the complete review
