This is a film i first watched in my early teens it is a film that has stuck with me since. The way the film is shot is simply breath taking. You can tell that there was a lot of consideration when it came to colour and light when you watch the film. The plot is based around a group of teenagers who online share the love of artists lily chou chou's music. Shhe makes songs of a melancholic nature that add to the films sad sombre tone. There are many things that the film delves into such as rape, suicide and the struggles of adolescence. It has no real message or point but it is like most avant garde cinema intriguing and at times beautiful to watch.
This is a japanese coming of age story that is graphic and has no holes barred approach. The film was shot on a dv camera and this really gives the film an orginal visual look which i think is why it has stayed with me through out the years.
The soundtrack of the film is simply beautiful it contains some classical pieces by debussy that really add an enigmatic quality to the film and highlight some rather beautiful scenes in the film that are simply engaging.
Lily Chou Chou in a nutshell is a peculiar film that doesn't give much away it is a film that has to be appreciated for it's visual beauty abd daring subject matter that makes you think.
