Advantages: excellent cast, great performances, top script and set design
Disadvantages: subtitles but its worth it, adult themes
Onr of Pedro Almodovar's most recent films and one which I was looking forward to very much. I wasn't dissapointed as this was a first rate production. subtitled. The story centres around Manuela and her sensitive son Esteban. For a birthday treat the single Manuela takes him to see a show featuring his favourite actress - Cecilia Roth. Manuela is a single parent and has never told esteban who ihis father is, after a tragic accident, Manuela sets out to find estebans father and tell him about their son. The shocks and jokes come along with her journey as do a bizzare multitude of characters typical of almodovar's style - we have the lesbian actress, her junkie assistant, a couple of transexuals and a nun. I wont spoil any detail of the film as it is to be savoured but heres a hint - before viewing this film, watch the sublime All About Eve starring Bette Davis, All about my Mother is a pastiche and homage to this classic with minor references (it is playing on the television etc.) All in all a classy melodrama delivered in Almodovar's unique style with a touch of black comedy, pathos and irony thrown in, a must see!!! The subtitles seem to dissolve after a while and you forget that the film is spanish.
