Almost Famous………..Almost My Favourite Film… I first watched this cracking little film about a month ago when I hired it out from my local video shop. Then last week it was shown on Sky box office and I decided to give it another viewing and I have to say the only film I know that beats it is Braveheart…….. It is directed by Cameron Crowe and stars the ever lovely Kate Hudson as Penny Lane and great acting by the young Patrick Fugit as our young writer William Miller. So what is it about you say, it’s about life my friends. Based on a young teenage boy who loves rock music but like all you fellow dooyoo folk his first love is writing. He gets a chance to write for a local rag and when that turns out well he receives a phone call to do an article for Rolling Stone magazine……….. So the film begins and takes our young friend on a journey on which at 16 he will discover life, women and rock and roll. He befriends the lovely Kate Hudson, why did I never meet a Kate Hudson at 16, still can’t have it all I suppose……. Anyway his assignment is about a band called Stillwater and the Rolling Stone magazine want him to follow the band on tour and find out all the nitty gritty on them. But being a young kid he becomes wrapped up with the band and its following. He forms a friendship with Russell who is the lead member of the group, but he has to realise that to be a top writer you have to leave personal friendships behind. His main relationship is with Penny Lane(Kate Hudson) and this relationship in the film is just perfection in acting terms….. It is a film that shows personal relationships when people are in a close proximity all the time. The acting and the music in the film is just superb. The film has a great beginning, a fantastic middle and it just ends as you had wanted it to………. I think peopl
e have their own favourite bits of films, I will tell you a few from this one. At the start when his elder sister leaves home she tells him to look under his bed. He is about 10 years old at the start of the film, and under the bed he finds part of her record collection. The old albums as they were back in the middle 70’s, those great covers and the way you could just open the album up. His sister has left him a note saying to light a few candles, and then put on the Who album Tommy…. Oh happy days!!!! I also loved how on the road he is adopted by the bands groupies who are all older than him. His innocence and the way he grows up on the road is so brilliantly written and portrayed. The poor guy is of course seduced by about three of the girls at once, yet again something I missed out on myself growing up…………….. The music in the film is mainly 70’s music but the band in concert are just great, you also have the usual band fights. Like a scene when the bands manager brings in t-shirts with the band printed on it but with only the lead singer visible, the rest were all out of focus…. Another favourite scene was the band flying home on a private plane and they think the plane is going to crash. So thinking they are all going to die they start to tell each other a few home truths, wouldn’t you just love to be able to tell people what you really think of them. But do they all get killed, now that would be telling wouldn’t it…………. I could just go on and on about this film, its such a beautiful movie. I can’t think of another film that I have watched that shows how people tick. It embraces that era when life was so sweet and growing up was innocent fun. The acting was just out of this world and to be honest I could watch it again and again. So at the end of the film does our young writer tell all about the band, or does he leave the bad
bits out, sorry can’t tell. God this is such a brilliant movie so get up off your bum and go to your local video shop now. It’s Friday so stop off and get a few beers as well…… You have gone and forgot the title haven’t you..”Almost Famous”…. Right my friends, I am off to get my Guinness, I bid you a good weekend, as ever your friend online…………… Why are you still here, get down to the blooming video shop, godsake do you want me to pay for the damn video as well……………….Get it!…..Enjoy…………̷ 0; Art…………..08th March 2002……………..
