Shlock maestro has made some terrible films in the past, such as House of the Dead, Bloodrayne, and Far Cry. Alone in the Dark, however, is something else - an unfunny, self-serious film (adapted from the popular video game series) that doesn't even have the cheesy fun that particularly House of the Dead did - this is a murky, terribly directed film that makes veritable mince meat out of lead Christian Slater.

What's noticeable to fans of the games is that the tone has been vastly changed - although the Edward Carnby character is back (played by Slater), he's embroiled in a plot that's more about ruins and disinteresting ancient artefacts than the somewhat more interesting content of the games. More ridiculous than this is the absurd casting of Tara Reid as Aline Cedrac, an archaeologist and museum curator. She is the ex-girlfriend of Edward Carnby, so there's that oh so important sexual tension present, and quite possibly one of the cheesiest sex scenes ever committed to film.

Even for Uwe Boll's terrible standards, this is an uninvolving, highly generic film that isn't even entertaining in a "so bad it's good" fashion. This is lazy, uninspired filmmaking as we've come to expect from Boll, and if we observe the film's numerous "accolades", it's no surprise:

- 1% on RottenTomatoes (and the second lowest rated film on the website)
- Alone in the Dark won three 2005 Stinkers Awards: Worst Picture, Worst Director (Uwe Boll), and Worst Special Effects
- It also won one Calvin Award: Worst Picture
- Alone in the Dark received two 2005 Golden Raspberry Awards nominations: Worst Director (Dr. Uwe Boll), and Worst Actress (Tara Reid)

This pathetically-crafted horror film is lazy-scripted, poorly acted and with shoddy production values, making it arguably Uwe Boll's worst film. Utterly dreadful, and only rarely funny, even in an ironic context.

Summary: Simply awful

Is the director's name missing from the first line? This does sounds pretty rotten, I can't say I've ever been tempted.
