Disadvantages: Pretty much all of it

Alone in the dark is a 2005 horror/ comedy that is very loosely based on the game of the same name. The film had a $20 million budget but only managed to gross just over $8 million at the box office, luckily it did a lot better on DVD. Alone in the dark is rated 18 because of the strong violence and gore and is 94 minutes long.

Cast
Christian Slater -- Edward Carnby
Tara Reid -- Aline Cedrac
Stephen Dorff -- Commander Burke
Will Sanderson -- Agent Miles
Françoise Yip -- Agent Cheung
Karin Konoval -- Sister Clara
Matthew Walker -- Prof. Lionel Hudgens
Mike Dopud -- Agent Turner

Plot
In the very first scene we get a huge passage of text about a lost civilisation called the Abkani and a load of babble about ancient artifacts and evil creatures.

We first learn of Edward Carnaby at the start of the movie when we see a load of kids from an orphanage get kidnapped but he seems to be the only one who escapes. Edward Carnaby is now a private investigator in the supernatural who used to work for a government agency, Bureau 713, who do exactly the same thing. Carnaby lost his memory when he was 10 years old and because of some wierd experiments he went through, he can now sense paranormal activities and has increased speed and strength. You think it cant get any sillier? Unfortunately it does.

Bureau 713 is now run by Commander Burke who Carnaby is forced to team up with in order to deal with all the nasty stuff thats been going on. With the help of museum curator, archaeologist and ex girlfriend Aline, he finds out just what he has been collecting and what has to be done to make things normal again.

The rest of the film is pretty much a load of pointless shooting and running around trying to find the monsters before they kill everyone.

My Opinion:
The film recieved extremely bad reviews, mostly because of the injustice it did to the series of Alone in the dark games. Whereas other films made on the basis of popular games did really well, this has to be one of the worst ones ever done.

Considering the film has a pretty good cast, it didnt really help it any. Christian Slater and Stephen Dorff should have been fantastic in this film but sadly, they really dissapointed me. Normally when a film is pretty dismal, at least the actors make it somewhat worth watching but no one really excelled in this one. Tara Reid was awful and should stick to comedies where she doesnt have to try and be any where close to serious.

The story is about as silly as we can possibly get and I was bored with it after about 10 minutes even though I actually wanted to turn it off after the opening with a huge amount of text. It wasnt the best way to capture an audience's attention. Although the beginning of the film attemps to explain what the story is about, hardly any of the rest of it makes sense. One scene jumps to the next with barely any explanation of whats going on or why. I would have been much happier if these monsters in the dark would have come out earlier and just eaten every single cast member. At least the film would have been funny for more than a second.

Im giving Alone in the dark 1 star because I have to, id rather give it a -10! There is a sequal to this film but i certainly dont care 1 little bit about it, so little that I dont even know the name of it.

Summary: Dont ever waste your money on this like I did

I watched this once and can't remember what it was about. Reading your review reveals to me why I forgot :D

I don't think making movies based on games [no matter how loosely] works somehow...
