I probably bought this film about 2 years ago. From reading about it, I decided to buy the Dvd. It was probably on offer for £5 or something, and I often think that if I don't like a film, then that amount of money isn't such a waste. Perhaps not that economical, but considering what I would have paid to go to the cinema, or rent it and it isn't that bad!
I only got round to watching this this afternoon after all that time. All the shows I tend to Sky+ are coming to an end just now, so I am finally getting round to watching some Dvds. So what is the film about and was it any good?
The 2 main characters in the film are Reuben, played by Ben Stiller and Polly, played by Jennifer Aniston.
It starts off with Reuben getting married. He has been with Lisa for over 4 years, he fell in love with her as soon as he saw her. She worked in Estate Agency, and he rented a house through her company, asked her out and that has been them ever since. he wedding goes without a hitch, and then they set off to St Barts on Honeymoon. Reuben works as a Risk accessor, and weather that is the indication that he doesn't tend to take risks in everyday life himself, i'm not sure. He isn't into anything that may endanger himself. When Claude the Scuba Dive instructor comes up to the newleyweds on the beach and asks if they want to go Scuba Diving Lisa says she'd love to, but Reuben doesn't want to.
So Lisa goes off and Reuben goes to the local shop and buys some nice food, Champagne and scatters rose petals around the bed for to seduce Lisa when she comes home. He goes back down to the beach to surprise Lisa, but it is Reuben who gets the surprise. He walks in on Lisa and Claude having sex on his boat. They both say it just happened, and it's at this point where Lisa says she wants to stay in St Barts, and it is over with Reuben. A bit harsh since they are just married!
Anyway Reuben heads home on his own, and tries to avoid the pitying glances from his friends, work colleauges and family. Also he had just bought an expensive house for them to live in, so he has to pack the other house up to move. He is a bit down in the dumps, so his best man gets him out the house and to an Art Gallery evening. It is here that he bumps into Polly. Polly recognises Reuben as someone he went to school with, and although he has just found out about Lisa, he eventually asks Polly out on a date. She accepts and the film goes from here.
Polly is totally different from Reuben. She is a free spirit, and lives life how it comes whereas Reuben has to have everything planned and organised. Polly doesn't know that Reuben is married or the story behind it until they meet Reuben's parents in a restaurant and his mum spills the story.
Reuben ends up falling for Polly, but they seem to be going through life in different directions. Polly likes Spicy food, Reuben doesn't, Polly likes dancing, and Reuben doesn't.
So will they end up together? Lisa makes an appearance back in Reubens life about 30 minutes from the end of the film and says she has made a mistake, so will Reuben take her back? You'll have to watch it and find out.
So what did I like about it? It was just a watchable film. I wouldn't say it was overly funny, dramatic or romantic, but it was just watchable.
It was kind of boring though and nothing new in the film. There was a toilet scene in it, which has been played out in many films. Where the man goes for a number 2, and there is only 1 sheet of toilet roll. Who only has 1 sheet of toilet roll in the house - especially if it is a women's house. I tend to stock pile toilet rolls. Instead of asking or looking around in cupboards, we get the "comedy", What Will I Wipe My Bum With? A bit bored of this kind of scene now. Also Polly has a Ferret, which is blind. I know no animals were harmed in the filming of this, but I don't find humour in animals banging into things and supposedly getting harmed. i may be over reacting, but that kind of humour doesn't appeal to me.
Ben Stiller played the same kind of character as he did in There's Something about Mary, and Meet The Parents, so i've seen all that acting before. Jennifer Aniston played the part well, and I think she seemed believeable.
I thought it was an alright film and it kept my attention, but I don't think I would watch it often, so I will donate my copy to a local charity shop. The film is a certificate 12 and lasts 1 hour 26 minutes.

- 31/05/09 I thought this was pants, not at all funny. Why are there no advantages/disadvantages filled out? They don't take a few seconds to do! |
