Advantages: Hilarious, Great cast, Fantastic script
Disadvantages: May not suit some tastes, Lots of in-jokes
This film has the feel of an independent movie but boasts a stella cast. How, you may ask. Because it's a got a great script, and you can't ask for more than that. America's Sweethearts is a lighthearted romp through Hollywood's darker side. John Cusak shines as the schizophrenic soon-to-be-ex-husband of Catherine Zeta Jones's character, Gwyn, a self-satisfied prima donna with a nasty side previously hidden from her adoring public. This is a film far more appreciated by those who already know a little about the ins and outs of the movie industry, but still has enough jokes that the common movie-going public can laugh alongside the rest of us. Billy Crystal's character is my own favourite, the hard-done-by movie publicist who suspends his morals for the good of the film, often to extreme comic effect. This is a real scorcher, not unexpected, I suppose, from such a strong cast, but thoroughly effective. My only gripe is with this film's publicity, which really didn't put through the quirky, in-joke nature of the film, but pimped it to an audience who may well be dissappointed by the lack of schmaltz. If you like alternative comedy and have even an inkling of the whole sordid hollywood process, you should love this. I did.
