American Dreamz (DVD) ... 02 July, 2006 at Universal Pictures Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / A sadly muddled and unsatisfying film, American Dreamz is beset by an identity crisis it never manages to answer. On paper, it's promising, if hardly radical. Hugh Grant plays the host of a top-rated American talent show. On his quest for ratings, he casts his net far and wide hunting for hopefuls, bringing in the likes of Mandy Moore as he does so. And a wannabe terrorist too. Which doesn't really make too much sense when you watch it either. Throw in an insecure President of the United States--played by Dennis Quaid--who finds himself, thanks to his key adviser (Willem Dafoe) as a guest judge on the show, and you have something of a mess. What's most surprising is that behind the camera is Paul Weitz, who's of late built upon his initial success with American Pie and brought us the excellent About A Boy (which again starred Grant), and the woefully-underrated In Good Company (which starred Quaid). Yet he's simply unable to work his magic here, as the film simply fails to gel. As a satire, it's targets are too soft and obvious, as a broad comedy it lacks laughs, and even as a straight hour and a half of easy entertainment, it's far too jumbled to be able to relax and enjoy. There may be an argument that in the midst of all of this is a decent enough movie struggling to break through. But the point is that it doesn't, and given the calibre and curriculum vitaes of some of those involved, American Dreamz has to be classed as a crushing disappointment. --Simon Brew

... across America. His character, Martin Tweed is very cocky and amazingly self-centred, thinking alot of himself and not too worried about others feelings but more concerned with ratings on the show. He brings together finalists for the show including the stereotypical Sally played by Mandy Moore who is the typical blonde bombshell with a great voice who would do anything for fame and doesn't mind who she treads on to get it. She is all sweetness and light when the camera is rolling but when off camera she is not so nice ...more

I was looking to a watch a film that was quite light hearted but not too silly and I have had a collection of films building up for ages so decided to dive into them and see what one I might be interested in. The one I picked out was the film American Dreamz I wasn’t really sure what it was about but for some reason after seeing the adverts a while back I had an idea that it was some kind of a political film, this may be to some extent but how wrong could I be. I have to say this film was probably not the best choice although it filled up nearly two hours of time I can’t say I came away from the film learning anything different. American Dreamz is a film which ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review I Have A Dream(Z) That This Film Will Never Be Watched Again ... (775 words)

Our televisions have been conquered by an invasion force of reality TV programs, and love them or hate them, there's no escaping their corrosive, mind numbing, tiresome and monotonous effect (can you tell what I think of them?) Naturally it was only a matter of time until someone, somewhere in the world would come up with an idea for a film based on Reality TV. Who do we have to blame for the disaster that is American Dreamz - Paul Weitz who wrote, produced, and directed it. American Dreamz (officially a comedy) is about a popular television talent show in America, that's hosted by a very self centered judge. The film follows a number of hopeful people wanting ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review American Dreamz (DVD): American Dreams, Dreams with a Zzzzzzzzzz...... (664 words)

American Dreamz is the sort of movie that could potentially be very funny. Note that word potentially. Directed by Paul Weitz who also directed About a Boy and American Pie, this movie is set around a popular American reality TV show. I saw the trailers for this and thought it looked good, but I never seem to get round to seeing things at the cinema and ended up getting this on DVD instead. ~The Plot~ The story revolves around the biggest TV show in America - American Dreamz. This is a singing contest which is hosted by a rather sarcastic and grumpy British Judge, Martin Tweed (Hugh Grant). Is this ringing any bells yet? The film follows the story ...  Read the complete review

For me this is one of Hugh Grant's best performances in American Dreamz which is from the directors of About a Boy and American Pie. It is a pretty funny movie that pokes fun at shows like American Idol and Pop idol talent shows and exagerates the contestants to extreme and how fanatical everyone gets about the shows and how everyone wants their five mintues of fame. Hugh Grant is fantastic as the sleazy host of a hugely successful and popular hit reality TV show American Dreamz which searches out singing talent across America. Premium Review American Dreamz (DVD): Not clever enough (323 words)
by - written on 12/10/09 (Very useful, 6 readings)
Rating:

American Dreamz is a film that, if you can struggle to make it past the horribly inane title, is a fairly pungent parody of the culture surrounding not only American Idol (and all of the disingenuity that entails), but also the Bush Administration. It's set some pretty easy targets, admittedly, and whilst it does connect mostly, it's also a rather daft film and one that could have been a lot more clever. On the morning of his re-election bid, US President Joseph Staton (Dennis Quaid) decides to, for the first time in years, actually bother reading a newspaper, and this opens up a big can of worms that sends every other character in the film into a frenzy; ...  Read the complete review
