Advantages: As funny as the first, never dull, left me smiling coming out of the cinema

Disadvantages: If you dont like american pie you'll hate this

If you watched the first American Pie it's unlikely that you've forgotten it, after all there's not many films where you get to see a sex-starved teenager enjoying liaisons with a pie, is there? On the back of its word of mouth notoriety and resulting box office thrust, it was inevitable that a second AP would be made.

We begin with Jim's dad picking accidentally walking in on him in bed with a young blonde. If that wasn't bad enough for poor Jim, his mum and then the blonde girl's parents follow his father in too. `I didn't catch her name, but hopefully my sonb did', his father stammers as Jim hastily pulls the blanket over them. From here the scene is set as we return to familiar ground as the first movie with plenty of sexually orientated jokes.

After their first year of college has ended, Jim, Stifler, Kevin, Oz and Finch are back home and bored. So after a tip from Kevin's brother the five set out to the beach where they rent themselves a party house and get summer jobs as painters. With a big end of summer party being planned, the lads have plenty more on their mind with Jim nervously awaiting Nadia's return, Stifler desperately seeking some lesbians, Kevin pining for Victoria, Oz missing the absent Heather and Finch craving for more of Stifler's mum.

AP2 is no Shakespearean work and offers little more than the first, but if you liked the first then that's no problem. As with 1999's pie scene, Jim's moment with a tube of glue is the main gross out moment, though Stifler's seduction through (what he thinks) is champagne is equally foul.

The show stealer however, as with the first movie is Jim's dad- excellently played by Eugene Levy. His deadpan, straight-faced humour is simply terrific with many of the funniest moments centred on him. The main cast too though prove that they've moved on from the first, though there is more than a distinct danger that Seann W
illiam Scott has been typecast having starred in Road Trip and Dude, Where's My Car since the first AP.

The character development is still strong though, building on what helped make the first so successful. Although we can laugh at Jim, his character is such that we also empathise with him and the others. The girls however are also merely bi-products to the lad-led movie. Mena Suvari barely features as Heather, Oz's absent girlfriend, with Tara Reid as Vicky and Alyson Hannigan as Michelle getting little more time either.

If you enjoyed the first, then this you will like this too. The writers and directors have taken the sensible approach of (as my teacher used to say) `if it ain't broke, don't poke', using the same ideas that gave them success before. The belly laughs are still there, the ‘ughs' are still there and so, of course, is the Sherminator.

But is there any point of going to the cinema to see it? well I'm not sure, you could always wait for the video but lets be honest, if your anything like me it wont matter what I put in this op you'll still go and see it. If like me you loved the first, your bound to love the second and while a lot of people on dooyoo have said it isnt as good as the first, if this was released first, it would be the same said about american pie. Its not better, its not worse, its just the same and thankfully for once the jokes are'nt tired yet.

4/5 (if you liked the first) 1/5 (if you didn't)
