Advantages: A really good beginning to the franchise
Disadvantages: Not for all
If I review these films through the order they were released I will begin back in 1999 - 8 years ago now. American Pie kick started my teen years and was almost a label of what I would hoping to be doing come my prom that would arrive 6 years after I saw this film. Getting laid. Can I say that? Well one things for sure the characters in this film don't speak about much other.
For those not familiar with American Pie the gang is lead by Jim (Jason Biggs) although I use the term gang really loosely, as these are not the coolest kids in school and more live in the shadows of their immature, although sexually more mature, friend Stifler (Seann William Scott). Stifler will always be throwing the craziest parties, and he almost is one of the prime examples of what is pushing them into trying to lose their virginity as well as the rest of society around them.
Jim and his friends 'Oz', Kevin and Finch make a pact that they will all lose their virginity by prom night and that it will be valid consensual sex, so no prostitutes. This is the basis for the main storyline. Jim's embarrassing dad, who also features in his usual role in the following films, is going to make sex an even more awkward discussion than it needs to be by bringing him home 'dirty' magazines so he can become aquainted with the female body although Jim doesn't do himself any favours when he is caught on the kitchen table 'making love' to a warm apple pie his mum had left after being told by Oz that is what a females lady garden felt like.
Things like Jim being walked in on by his parents whilst he is trying to illegally receive the adult channels on his television set whilst wearing a tube sock over his genitals are I'm sure would be every teenagers worst nightmare and that is one of the reasons American Pie was so successful back in the day at bringing a whole new generation to teen movies. Whilst I hope in real life things wouldn't be so drastic between a father and a son, I know there are the awkward moments when your father sits you down for THAT talk.
Oz, a member of the schools American football team, comes stereotypically as the most likely to lose his virginity before prom and that is why he feels he has so much to lose. He is a jock afterall. At the start of the film pulling out cheesy pick-up lines such as, "Suck me beautiful," and calling himself 'Casanova' but he possibly goes on the biggest journey of the group in the short amount of time they have. Oz infiltrates a choir group seeing it as an 'untapped source' for girls, only he learns not everything is about sex.
Will the others realise there is more to life than sex though? Jim for one has an ambition to sleep with the foreign exchange student, Nadia. If you don't remember the film for the embarrassing moment that happened to Jim with the pie, you will remember it for Nadia's embarrassing moment. When Jim agrees to help Nadia with her school work after school and finds out the only catch is Nadia will need to change her clothes in Jim's bedroom he quickly hatches a plan to set up a webcam so that he can view Nadia changing. Only he gets more than he bargains for when he accidently puts the webcam show up for anyone on the internet to view and Nadia actually shows an interest in sleeping with him.
Kevin already has a girlfriend in Vicky, played by party animal Tara Reid, their relationship does take a turn for the worse however when she feels he is trying to pressure her into sex. Can their relationship survive the pressures of Kevin's pact with his friends? Finch on the other hand uses his money to get one of Vicky's friends to spread 'good' rumours about him. Will they backfire or will Finch be the prom date everyone is dying to sleep with?
One things for sure in a world of teen movies surely everything will come together in the end. There are great supporting characters in Michelle, the band geek, and moments that will make you laugh out loud or squirm (depending on your age) such as Kevin and Vicky having spent a 'moment' together in a room and Kevin's relieving himself in a beer, only for Stifler to come along and drink it. And of course there is also Stifler's mum thrown in for good measure, a sex symbol to the younger cast members. The amount of times I have had to use apostophes and alluded to sex must be a new Ciao record, but that gives you a great idea of what American Pie is about.
The certificate is 15 and if you are much older than that you probably won't appreciate the film for who it is supposed to be aimed at, running at around an hour and a half, if you do like this sort of thing - you'll be in for a treat.
Summary: A treat that tastes like pie.
