Well my next review is on a comedy film, I figured ive written an action review and a drama review so why not give comedy ago. Im reviewing American Pie (1) directed by Paul and Chris Wietz, and starring Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan and many more teen actors. The film was released in 1999, and grossed well over $225 million. Now as most people no, this film spawned many more sequels, ive seen the other two, but they've made a few more low budget one's too, however the original cast are not in these extra films. For me the first film was by far the best out of the Trilogy, mainly because it was so original and you didn't expect things to happen, after the second one you got use to the characters and style of comedy, so since the first film was my favourite I figured why not reviews it. I remember I was actually not 15 at the time and so couldn't go to the cinema to watch it, and to be honest I totally forgot about the film until the second one came out. By which point my friends had seen both the first and second one and so I had to watch one and then two to at least make some sort of conversations with them. I remember the first time I watched the film I was beyond to point of laughing so much my stomach was in knots.

Plot:

The story follows a group of four teenagers that go to Michigan high school seniors. Tired of not having any sexual activity in their lives, the four make a pact that they will all loose their virginity before their high school graduation. This whole pact came about as one of the geeks in their class "Sherman" bragged that he was no longer a virgin, and considering how geeky he looked, the other four felt seriously ashamed that they had yet to loose it.
The four characters all have different personalities and goals and different situations regarding their pact. Kevin Myers (Thomas Ian Nicholas) already has a girlfriend, however he has yet to go the distance with her, and they are currently experiencing difficulties in their relationship. Chris "Oz" Ostreicher (Chris Klein) is the hansom looking one out of the group; he joins the glee club in order to attract the attention of a beautiful singer.
Paul Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is the most sophisticated member of this group, he drinks his coffee, meditates and does yoga, he can attract girls, however he is looking for someone that will blow his world, watch the film and you'll see who. And finally we have Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) who tries to seduce a foreign exchange student, but does he succeed. Does this group of four, desperate people loose their virginity, and what surprises are we in for during the film, I guess you will just have to watch and find out.

Characters:

Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs): Jim is probably the focal character in the film, its all about Jim finally loosing his virginity. Jim is probably a character most guys can relate to in some sort of weird way; he's sexually frustrated and depressed that everyone around him is getting girls, whilst he pathetically sits ay home watching porn. Jim's sexual fantasies take some seriously funny turns in this film, and his character does some things that I though were just hilarious.

Kevin Myers (Thomas Ian Nicholas): Kevin is the leader of the group and the person that initiates the pact with his other friends. He already has a girlfriend, but their relationship is somewhat complexed, they have done everything except the love making part, it seems that neither one it ready yet, and they don't wont do ruin their relationship by rushing into it.

Chris "Oz" Ostreicher (Chris Klein): Chris is like the baby face character of this film, a young James Dean. He's a jock, but also has a sensitive side to him and this is shown through his pursuit of the glee club beauty Heather. For me he is probably the most sensible of all the characters in the film, and sometimes makes you question why he has such stupid, dopy friends.

Paul Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas): Although very nerdy looking, Paul attracts a lot of girls, probably because he's smart, and has a way of making girls notice him. His character has always had a fascination with older women and in particular Steve's mum. Paul and Steve never really get along, and this is evident throughout the film, for instance, Paul never uses the school toilets, however one day Steve puts laxatives in his food, and Paul must desperately use the school toilets.

Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott): Stifler is by far one of the best additions to this film. I can so relate to him because my friend often some how compares me to him. He bold, loud and always up for a good laugh. He's the funny one in the group and a person everyone at times hates to be around because they have a tendency of chatting a loud of waffle, but then other times can bring so much laughter.

Michelle Flaherty (Alyson Hannigan): Michelle is the geeky girl that Jim meets at Band camp, she's well a bit weird to say the least, but her character develops and who would have ever pictured her being the way she is. (Watch the film)

Noah Levenstein (Jim's Dad) (Eugene Levy): Noah is Jim's dad, and a seriously down to earth father. He and Jim share several funny encounters, for instance when Jim is left alone with a pie, or when he catches him watching porn. He to me is the sort of dad every teenager would love to have.

My View:

For me this film was brilliant, I was just funny from start to end, and I suppose what made it better from other films was that it was so original. I think American Pie set a trend for the future teenage movies to come out in cinemas. The film was bold in the sense that it discussed some controversial issues, which parents might find wrong, but simply put it was a topic that so many high school teenagers would relate to. They made sex seem so funny, and wasn't a taboo. The characters and scenes within the film were brilliant, the film just sort of flowed together, and it wasn't slow and made me laugh from start to finish. However, I wouldn't recommend taking your date to see this film, I suppose for me American Pie is a guys film, we have so many chick flicks nowadays, this film was one of a few that we could say was to some extent for the guys.
