Advantages: Quite entertaining and some genuinely funny moments
Disadvantages: A little crude in places for some tastes....certainly not a family film
This is a review of the film only not the ultimate edition DVD as advertised as I watched this for the umpteenth time the other night on ITV and thought I could add my two penneth worth....
We all know the story by now- there can be hardly anyone alive who hasn't caught this at least once- but for those who have been living in a cave for the last 10 years, the plot is as follows... Jason Biggs and his buddies all make a pact; namely to lose their virginity and score before the Prom. What follows is a hilarious series of events that aims to outgross any similar-veined comedies that may have come before it. The plot in itself is nothing new and there have been numerous attempts to tell this story before in endless different formats and surroundings but where American Pie succeeds above all others is that even when it is presenting acts of bad taste, it does so tastefully ensuring that they still remain funny and not crude simply for the point of being rude. And, though the characters aim is all to get laid, it is important to note that as the story progresses, it no longer becomes simply about that and each of the friends learns a very important and valuable lesson; be it that people are often more deeper and complex than you might have expected, that sometimes atraction can come in the most unlikely of forms or even that sometimes sex is about more than just...well, sex!
One of the most famous scenes that gives the movie it's name develops when someone tells Jason Biggs that making love is like "warm apple pie." Cue experimentation with home-baked goods much to his father's amusement! In fact, Jason's dad is just one of several hidden gems in this movie as he tries to educate his son and prepare him for the world of women; not least when he supplies Biggs with adult top shelf material and encourages him to acquaint himself with Miss Palmer Hand and her five sisters!
If you don't like crude and juvenile humour, this is probably not for you but the material is handled very tastefully and there are plenty of jokes and material here for anyone with a slightly broader mind. I would say this film doesn't really live up to repeated viewings and once you have seen it once, that is probably enough. But it is certainly worth a watch if you have never seen it before and it is relatively amusing for what it is.
Unfortunately, in later films, the producers would milk this franchise to it's absolute limits but, here at least, the end result is certainly a fun film to watch.
Summary: A group of friends make a pact not realising what they are letting themselves in for...
