Advantages: Funny with great characters.
Disadvantages: None - just a couple of gross moments, lack of depth
American Pie is a Comedy film which follows a group of teenagers as they progress through their sexual lives. Released in 2000 this movie was a major hit at the box office and met its quota as a witty comedy with ease.
The Plot
The movie centers around four characters who vow to leave high school having lost their virginity. The leads Jim (Jason Biggs), Oz (Chris Klein), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas).
The four friends make a pact to have had sex by prom night giving them three weeks to find dates and lose their virginity. Jim is dateless and spends much of the film learning about sexual exploits through his various mistakes.
This film is one in a series and was released in 1999. The jock of the group is played by 'Oz' who dates Heather. Kevin Myers has the steady girlfriend Vicky who will not have sex with her. Steve Stifler becomes more prominent as the film progresses as Paul Finch has a fasination with his mom.
My Thoughts
The film is explicit and as a film about sexual expolits, it contains many crude moments. I feel the scriptwriting and the comic timing of this film is strong as laughs are shared by different characters as many characters have funny moments. Whilst the script writing is strong and the movie for a comedy isn't always predictable, it is the cast that make this film truely brilliant. Jason Briggs playing the role of 'hapless' Jim portrays the character well and pulls of comic one liners with ease an example of this is the apple pie moment of the film. His love interest in the film Flute playing Michelle (Alyson Hanningan)
is hilarious in her role as talkative band geek. The line 'One Day at Band Camp' is widely associated with this film. Alyson has a major part in this film of helping Jim learn about sex. Tara Reid in her role as Vicky is amusing and the chemistry displayed with the character of Kevin is strong. I feel that while there is many strong acting performances in this film, the film sometimes lacks depth and whilst it used to be my favourite film, it's jokes grow old as you mature. Still worth a watch for many of the younger generation.
Well Worth Watching.
Summary: American Pie. A brilliant film!
