Advantages: Hilarious, successfully resurrected teen comedies
Disadvantages: Can be too 'nice' in parts
Everybody knows that nowadays, if you want to make a successful comedy film, you have to give the audience something which takes disgusting jokes to a new level, such as There's Something About Mary with its interesting new brand of hair gel. I'm sure there is not a single person who has not heard about a particularly disgusting scene (or two) in American Pie, but if you haven't, the title of this opinion is a 'hint'. American Pie follows the escapades of a group of relatively horny soon-to-be high-school graduates who, after a party, decide to make a 'pact' that they should all lose their virginities before they graduate. So Jim, Kevin, Finch and Oz each form different schemes in order to help them get laid quickly, as always 'with hilarious consequences'. It is, however, true to say that American Pie is not your average comedy cash-in which doesn't really make you laugh. If you look back to older 'sex comedies', such as Porky's or Animal House, they were only really about blokes getting sex and discussing their problems and the women were often just treated as objects (sorry about the cliché). American Pie is not only genuinely 'laugh-out-loud' funny just about all the way through, but it treats the women with respect and all of the laughs are almost always at the lads. This makes the film appeal to both sexes, with characters such as Kev's girlfriend Vicky playing major parts in the development of the story. Each character has his or her own 'quality, which makes them particularly amusing. Jim is desperate, and seems to enjoy baked goods a little too much. Kevin is trying to get Vicky into bed, but always seems to balls it up. Finch can?t take a sh*t in school and enjoys coffee liqueurs and mini-golf. Oz is a 'jock', an irritating American expression I know, but that?s about all I can say about him. Not that he isn?t a good character though. Introducing the co
ncept of a M.I.L.F ('Mom I'd Like to F*ck?) and the phrase 'Suck me beautiful!', American Pie proves to be very memorable, but I would now like to talk about one of the films greatest characters. Jim's dad. From start to finish, every scene with Jim's dad is fantastic, with some great one-liners such as 'I did my fair bit of masturbating when I was your age' or 'We'll just tell your mother we ate it all'. This is a must see for anyone who likes laughing, isn't squeamish, and doesn't mind seeing a beautiful women get topless. Definitely one of the funniest films made in the nineties, American Pie will turn you off apple-pie for the rest of your life.
