Advantages: Average movie
Disadvantages: No depth
I first heard about 'American Psycho' last summer when I heard someone talking about it and their conversation intrigued me. I bought the book purposely before I had viewed the film, as, is usually the case, the book often exceeds the expectations of its cinemagraphic successor. An OK novel told in the first person narrative, you are told of the intimate details of anti-hero Patrick Bateman's everyday routine: what aftershave or face lotion he is wearing, what suit and tie he is wearing and where he bought it and, bizarrely, graphic details of his and his colleagues business cards. Although this does come over in the film from time to time, you really miss the indepth descriptions of so many people and so many things described so well in the book. We are almost immediately plunged into a couple of needless and brutal killings which kind of set the tone for what we are in for in the next 98 minutes. Just when you have settled and prepare yourself for a deep, psycological thriller, what you actually see is a mixture of the bizarre and the sublime. This movie must be treated as a very black comedy and a satirical look at the high powered, high stress career of a Wall Street banker in New York in 1987 (or thereabouts). A fairly grisly movie which has its fair share of chilling moments, but no real depth. Overall, it lacked a lot and did not really live up to expectations.
