An American Werewolf in London in a horror movie from the early 80's (1981) which is the time when horror movies were being churned out and most of them were terrible. This is different, written and directed by John Landis, who is also responsible for bringing us Blues Brothers, Michael Jacksons Thriller, Trading Places, Three Amigos and Spys Like Us. The film is actually a comedy horror, but the special effects which it won an oscar for make the werewolf scenes frightening, at the time the film came out they special effects were ground breaking. Also the film has one of the best soundtracks ever, each song has a reference to the moon in the title or lyrics. David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) are American students in England starting a tour of Europe. They find themselves lost on the Yorkshire Moors, after leaving the local pub where the only help they got was to be told to 'keep off the moors, keep to the road and may god be with you'. Unfortunately they dont keep to the road and end up getting attacked by a 'wild animal', Jack is killed and David wakes in a hospital in London where he is told they were attacked by a madman and the authorities assume that Davids claims he was attacked by a wild animal is down to the trauma he's been through. David is visited by his dead friend Jack who starts warning David that he is a werewolf. David starts thinking he is going crazy, until the next full moon.
This is a brilliant film, it is funny at times but when the horror starts the whole atmosphere of the film changes in an instant.
I may look at this film will rose tinted glasses as I remember watching this when I was younger and it was my favourite film as a teenager. It may look dated but its a great film, well worth watching.
Summary: Funny, Scary and a brilliant take on the werewolf genre.
