Advantages: Hilarious and interesting

Disadvantages: Will do little for Smith fans

If you're at all a fan of Kevin Smith's films, you owe it to yourself to buy An Evening with Kevin Smith - a rip roaringly hilarious stand-up style Q&A at several American universities, including Clark University, Cornell University, Indiana University, Kent State University and University of Wyoming. Smith has then edited the best parts of each night together into an almost 4-hour long, relentless riffing on the film industry, his own life, his best friend and collaborator Jason Mewes, and his own views on just about everything, with the usual Smith wit fans of his films have become used to.

What makes this such a joy is that Smith clearly loves to talk, and when he talks, it's just spoken gold - he has lived an exciting and very interesting career and life, and to hear the numerous gut-busting anecdotes in his repertoire is a sure treat for fans of his. From his very peculiar job working as a documentarian for Prince, to his work on the defunct "Superman Lives!" project, he depicts a very strange side of both himself and the celebrity culture. As usual, it's puncutated with his usual crude sense of humour, but it's endearing, and played off against the usually more clean presentations of the audience members (although their referencing and gushing does become a little irritating after 4 hours). For the unitiated, there's probably not much here of interest, but if you're an ardent Smith fan, this is pure gold - an intimate and extremely funny insight into the man and the filmmaker.

Kevin Smith manages to carry a near-4 hour runtime with his typically crude, but witty humour, as well as a wealth of compelling anecdotes, providing great insight into Smith not only as a filmmaker, but as a human being. Essential for fans of his work.

Summary: A hilarious and engrossing standup Q&A
