Analyze That (DVD) ... released 15 September, 2003 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / Analyze That has more bada bing than its lukewarm box office reception would lead you to expect. Analyze This (1999) had the advantage of a then-fresh idea--Robert De Niro as a neurotic mob boss seeking therapy with reluctant shrink Billy Crystal--but that idea's stale (and has been handled more authentically in The Sopranos), so this sequel relies on established chemistry and zesty dialogue that matches the original. There's nothing wrong with a retread when it's this funny, and De Niro's latter-day penchant for comedy suits him well when, as kingpin Paul Vitti, he lures Dr Sobel (Crystal) into a prison breakout scheme involving faked catatonia and West Side Story show tunes. The contrived plot involves Vitti's criminal comeback. Unfortunately, there's little room for Lisa Kudrow as Sobel's sarcastic wife, but De Niro's Raging Bull co-star Cathy Moriarty-Gentile is welcomed as a rival mob queen. You want a comedy masterpiece? Fuhgeddaboudit. You want 95 minutes of easy fun? It's right here... and don't miss those obligatory outtakes. --Jeff Shannon

Premium Review Analyze That (DVD): Part 2 and long over due (437 words)

Rating:

(Part 2)...Analyze that on the other hand is a lot less funny (which is odd as the main actors are the same and the writer/director are the same). With the first movie having a lot of light hearted gangster humour this movie takes you more gangster and less humour. Paul Vitti in Analyze this was a fun gangster, who sure wasn't a wonderfully nice bloke but had reformed and was repenting for his sins. In Analyze that (based 3 years later) Vitti goes crazy in prison (with the wonderfully brilliant scene of him singing West Side Story songs), and sadly the humou goes a bit crazy to. Despite being a pretty likeable gangster in the original in the sequel Vitti's ...  Read the complete review

Over the last few nights, rather than sit and watch hours of endless rubbish on TV I have been catching up on the films I’ve bought and been meaning to see. So that means there’s material for at least three more ops. The first of these films was the follow up to the 1999 comedy Analzye This. Ramis returned with the same key cast members to try and make a sequel to the surprise hit. Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) has been imprisoned in Sing Sing a maximum-security prison following the end of the first film. He runs everything inside but when his cellmate is transferred without requesting it Vitti gets nervous and so that night rather than sleep in his ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Analyze That (DVD): De Niro scores again in light hearted comedy (296 words)
by - written on 01/03/09 (Very useful, 59 readings)

WHAT IS IT ABOUT: Three years after the release of Analyze This, comes the sequel. Robert De Niro again stars as Paul Vitti, the newly incarcerated mob boss from New York. When Vitti is released into the care of Dr Sobel (Billy Crystal) after suffering from bouts of insanity, chaos soon follows. WAS IT ANY GOOD: Yet again, this is a nice little comedy. The performances are type-cast, and the plot fairly predictable, but it's funny too! The relationship between Crystal and De Niro is stronger than ever, and the two are more flexible than in their first outing together. De Niro lightens up a bit and gives a better performance than in the original, ...  Read the complete review
